GENERAL MATHEMATICS – QUIZ #1

1. What is the net income of a shipping company in a month if its gross income is
described by the function, , and the total expenses is
described as

Solution:

Let 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) be the net income. Then

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = gross income − total expenses

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥 ) − 𝑒𝑒(𝑥𝑥)

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = 4(𝑥𝑥 − 3)2 − 5 − (𝑥𝑥 2 − 𝑥𝑥 + 1)

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = 4(𝑥𝑥 2 − 6𝑥𝑥 + 9) − 5 − 𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑥𝑥 − 1

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = 4𝑥𝑥 2 − 24𝑥𝑥 + 36 − 5 − 𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑥𝑥 − 1

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = 3𝑥𝑥 2 − 23𝑥𝑥 + 35

2. The cost of hiring a catering service to serve food for a party is ₱450 per head for
20 persons or less, ₱400 per head for 21 to 50 persons, and ₱350 per head for 51
to 100 persons. If there are more than 100 persons, the cost is ₱300 per head.

a. Represent the total cost as a piecewise function of the number of

attendees of the party.
Solution:
Let 𝑥𝑥 be the number of persons attending and 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) be the cost of hiring
the catering service
450𝑥𝑥, if 𝑥𝑥 ≤ 20
400𝑥𝑥, if 21 ≤ 𝑥𝑥 ≤ 50
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) =
350𝑥𝑥, if 51 ≤ 𝑥𝑥 ≤ 100
300𝑥𝑥, if 𝑥𝑥 > 100
b. How much would it cost to serve food for 75 persons?
if 𝑥𝑥 = 75,
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = 350𝑥𝑥 = 350(75) = 26250
It would cost ₱26,250 for 75 persons.
3. Find the solutions of the following:

a.
Solution:
Multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD (𝑥𝑥 − 3)(𝑥𝑥 + 3) and simplify
𝑥𝑥 − 1 1 2
(𝑥𝑥 − 3)(𝑥𝑥 + 3)  2 −  = (𝑥𝑥 − 3)(𝑥𝑥 + 3)
𝑥𝑥 − 9 𝑥𝑥 − 3 𝑥𝑥 + 3
𝑥𝑥 − 1 1 2
(𝑥𝑥 − 3)(𝑥𝑥 + 3)  −  = (𝑥𝑥 − 3)(𝑥𝑥 + 3)
(𝑥𝑥 − 3)(𝑥𝑥 + 3) 𝑥𝑥 − 3 𝑥𝑥 + 3
𝑥𝑥 − 1 − (𝑥𝑥 + 3) = 2(𝑥𝑥 − 3)
−4 = 2𝑥𝑥 − 6
2𝑥𝑥 = 6 − 4
2𝑥𝑥 = 2
𝑥𝑥 = 1

b.
Solution:
Let
𝑥𝑥 − 2
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) =
3 − 𝑥𝑥
The solution of the function is
𝑥𝑥 − 2
0=
3 − 𝑥𝑥
0 = 𝑥𝑥 − 2
𝑥𝑥 = 2

The function is undefined if the denominator is 0

3 − 𝑥𝑥 = 0
𝑥𝑥 = 3
Hence, the line 𝑥𝑥 = 3 is the vertical asymptote of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥)
Subdivide the graph of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) into 3 sections:
𝑥𝑥 ≤ 2
2 < 𝑥𝑥 < 3
𝑥𝑥 ≥ 3
For 𝑥𝑥 < 2,
1−2 1
if 𝑥𝑥 = 1, 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = =−
3−1 2
0−2 2
if 𝑥𝑥 = 0, 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = =−
3−0 3
−1−2 3
if 𝑥𝑥 = −1, 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = =−
3−(−1) 4
For 2 < 𝑥𝑥 < 3,
(9/4)−2 1
if 𝑥𝑥 = 9/4 or 2.25, 𝑓𝑓 (𝑥𝑥 ) = =
3−(9/4) 3
(5/2)−2
if 𝑥𝑥 = 5/2 or 2.5, 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = =1
3−(5/2)

(11/4)−2
if 𝑥𝑥 = 11/4 or 2.75, 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = =3
3−(11/4)
For 𝑥𝑥 > 3,
4−2

3−4
10−2 8
if 𝑥𝑥 = 10, 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = =−
3−10 7
20−2 18
if 𝑥𝑥 = 20, 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) = =−
3−(20) 17
Hence, to make the inequality

2 < 𝑥𝑥 < 3

4. Graph
Solution:

Let
𝑥𝑥
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 ) =
𝑥𝑥 − 2
The function is undefined if the denominator is 0
𝑥𝑥 − 2 = 0
𝑥𝑥 = 2

Hence, the line 𝑥𝑥 = 2 is the vertical asymptote of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥)

Subdivide the graph of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) into 2 sections:

𝑥𝑥 < 2

Plotting the points, we get the following graph
5. Find the inverse of

Solution: Let 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥)

𝑥𝑥 − 1
𝑦𝑦 =
2𝑥𝑥 + 3

To get the inverse, interchange 𝑦𝑦 and 𝑥𝑥

𝑦𝑦 − 1
𝑥𝑥 =
2𝑦𝑦 + 3
Solve for 𝑦𝑦 in terms of x
𝑥𝑥 (2𝑦𝑦 + 3) = 𝑦𝑦 − 1
2𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 + 3𝑥𝑥 = 𝑦𝑦 − 1
𝑦𝑦 − 2𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 = 3𝑥𝑥 + 1
𝑦𝑦(1 − 2𝑥𝑥 ) = 3𝑥𝑥 + 1
3𝑥𝑥 + 1
𝑦𝑦 =
