Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

 Background of the study

According to Asian J Psychiatry the Novel of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)

originating from China has rapidly crossed borders, infecting people throughout the

whole world. Due to the similarity between Covid-19 and SARS Coronavirus, and

because the virus was posing to be a global threat, online courses for awareness of

healthcare workers around the world were initiated. With World Health Organization

(WHO) actions to support the community and tailor actions for the quality care of

patients, it is critical that accurate information is disseminated and used, particularly in

Public Health Emergency Situation. Because of current coronavirus (COVID-19)

pandemic, providing updates on World Health Organization (WHO) definitionand

coding for COVID-19 to support the community. (Luciana K. Tanno, 2020)

According to Ahmad Taysir Atieh Qarawi (2020) a global study protocol are

important to prevent the further spread of the disease through awareness and

preparedness in managing the 2019-nCoV infection. The recent outbreak of respiratory

illness caused by a novel coronavirus (named “COVID-19”) has gained attention

globally and has been recognized as a serious public health threat by US Centers

Control and Prevention (CDC). This is a multicenter multinational survey aiming

assess the level of preparedness to deal with the outbreak. It will also measure the level

of awareness especially in any hospital staff about the crisis and how will react to limit

and prevent further transmission. (Sharma, 2020)

In Corporation with the UNICEF and the international Federation of Red Cross the

coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) represents a difficult challenge and could have

devastating consequences for the healthcare system and health care workers globally with poor

facilities. However, urgent action and interventions are needed to improve the preparedness and

awareness to manage COVID-19. The perceived barriers also need to be fully addressed by the

local healthcare authorities and international organizations working for adequate prevention and

control measures to be in place in managing COVID-19. These recommendations concern

knowledge and science provision in understanding disaster and health related emergency risks,

the extension of disaster risks and potential health-emergency, particularly for humanitarian

coordination aspects and the strengthening of community-level preparedness and response.

(Djalante, 2020)

As a claimed by Halen B Ancheta (2020) Department of Education (DepEd) release

department order series instructing all basis education intstitutions to come up with their

learning continuity plan (LCP) and health and safety protocols in the new normal in education

during the pandemic. 2019 data from the Department of Health, the Philippines Human

Resources for Health (HRH) in Private and Public facilities. There is also a greater need for

educational institutions to strengthen the practices in the curriculum and make it more

responsive to the learning needs of the students even beyond the conventional classrooms.

(Toquero, 2020)

According to JCM Sampan (2020) agency of the Department of Labor Employment

(DOLE) and a membership involve public and private institution, and attainment to select

Sustainable Development Goals and the Philippines Development Plan. Key strategies include

tailor-fit training, awareness campaigns and information drive, and co-creating youth
3

entrepreneurship-oriented policies, which are designed through a three-year implementation

program with a physical, systematic and financial perspective. Bacolod City PIO was developed

to ensure access of the infant and children to recommend thus, identifying the barriers that have

averted from adhering to complete and timely immunization is important. (Ridad, 2020)

To combat this pandemic carried out from different parts confirmed from different parts

the existence of this study through the knowledge level about the effects of the phenomenon

about the novel of COVID-19. This study can help to aim and cope up more learning

improvements skills to prevent the spread of this crisis which an effective tools and

knowledgeable survey study to qualified respondents. However, the problem that some do not

have enough knowledge pertaining to existing in our society. Also the researcher aims to

measure the knowledge level among the respondents in VMA Global College and Training

Centers, Inc. towards the effects of COVID-19. This can be achieved through a combination of

a public health measure, such as rapid identification, diagnosis and management of the cases,

identification and follow up of the contacts, infection prevention and control in health care

settings, implementation of health measures for travelers, awareness-raising in the population

and risk communication to inform and evaluate solutions to overcome and reduce the intensity

of spreading rate, death rate, and pre-cautionary measures are required to control this crisis

disease. Furthermore, the suggested output through clinic or Occupation Safety and Health

(OSH).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the level of knowledge of Senior High School Students in

VMA Global College and Training Center, Inc. enrolled 2nd semester for Academic Year 2020-

COVID-19.

Future Researchers. The result of this study would provide information and stand as a

guide to the future researcher. This study will benefit the other researcher who conducted the

same study or idea and make this study as a citation for the study that will be conducted. The
6

future researchers can help not only the students but in our community by giving safety and

proper skills is mostly important.

Definition of Terms

Awareness.  Concern about and well-informed interest in a particular situation or

development. Is the being condition of being aware of something. All the more explicitly, it is

the capacity to straightforwardly know and see, to feel, or to be mindful of occasions.

Cause. A principle, aim, or movement that because of a deep commitment, one is

prepared to defend or advocate. A person or thing that gives rise to an action phenomenon, or

condition.

Covid-19.  A disease by a new strain of coronavirus “CO '' stands for corona.  “VI”

for virus, “D” for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as a ‘2019 novel coronavirus’

or ‘2019-ncov’. Corona Virus (CoV) are an enormous group of infections that cause sickness

going from the normal virus to more serious illness. An epic Covid (nCov) is another strain

that has not been recently distinguished in people.

Effect of the Disease.  People not only physically, but also mentally, as contracting

and living with a disease can alter the affected person's perspective on life. Death due to

disease is called death by natural causes.

Knowledge. Awareness or familiarity gained by experience of a fact or situation. It is

facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience of education.

The theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.

Mode of Transmission. Is the means which an organism transfers from one carrier to

another by either direct transmission and indirect transmission.

7

Prevention. The active process of creating conditions that promote the well-being

people. The demonstration or practice of preventing something terrible from occurring.

Primary prevention may be accomplished by measures of “Health promotion and specific

protection”.

Symptoms of Covid-19. Sign and symptoms of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) Most

people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness

and recover without requiring special treatment.

 Review of Related Literature

During epidemics and pandemics, a gap in knowledge about the emerging disease can

cause chaos and panic among the public. Distributing the proper information can not only guide

society through such events but can also increase epidemic preparedness that might occur in the

future. In addition, negative attitudes and practices towards new infectious diseases can

aggravate epidemics which may eventually result in pandemics. Awareness, Attitude and

practice have been studied in many previous epidemics such as swine influenza, Middle East

Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Dengue fever. Better awareness of these diseases along

with positive attitudes and practices towards them has shown to help contain the spread of the

causative viruses. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new

variable of the Coronaviridae family. COVID-19 spreads primarily by contacting the virus

either from a COVID-19-infected individual through coughing or sneezing or from COVID-19-

contaminated surfaces. On March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced

COVID-19 as a pandemic. The government among the first countries in the world to take quick

and serious precautions. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has made the public aware of the virus
8

transmission patterns and the importance of quarantine and curfew. Despite strict measures

taken, the awareness of people towards infectious viruses remains the most important factor in

limiting the widespread of diseases. The novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19), which was

first detected in Wuhan City, has now became a pandemic that affecting patients around the

world. Particularly, the community patient population is at high risk of infection and is facing

potential failure of proper medication use during the pandemic. (H Alahdal et al., 2020)

(WHO) regions implemented immediate reporting of COVID-19 cases through systems already

in place-such as the European Surveillance System in European Region, EMFLU in the eastern

Mediterranean Region, and FluNet in the Americas Region or by setting new electronic data

collection system ( South-East Asia Region). The flow of data from WHO Regional Officers to

WHO HQ was organized using the existing Global Influenza Surveillance System, allowing

regions to rapidly transfer information. A Global Surveillance COVID-19 database centralizing

all COVID-19 cases reported from outside of the China is maintaion at WHO HQ, and data

analysis is conducted daily to follow the transmission of the disease between the countries

describe the characteristics of human-to-human transmission within clusters of cases, describe

the characteristic of affected persons and their exposure history and support the evaluation of

public health measures implemented in response epidemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do not recommend wearing face

masks other nations, and it should lead local residents to increase their awareness of COVID a

comprehensive on-line public health information system of the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention (CDC), was developed to place timely, action-oriented information in the hands of

public health professional’s methods. A unified system was developed De Novo to be used for
9

and to evolve along with public health. CDC provides a common foundation from which to

build information-based public health plans and policy and could help strengthen the public

health system. (Shantz et al., 2020). COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly through close

contact from person to person, including between people who are physically near each other

(within about 6 feet). People who are infected but do not show symptoms can also spread the

virus to others. Cases of reinfection with the COVID-19 have been reported but are rare. We are

still learning about how the virus spreads and the severity of illness it causes.

To reduce the transmission of COVID-19 workers and employers in the private sector

will be mandated to observe strict to health protocols as the enhanced community quarantine

(ECQ) and general community quarantine (GCQ) remain effect. In the terms of guidelines on

workplace prevention and control of COVID-19 signed by the trade secretary Ramon Lopez

and labor secretary Silvestre Bello III, workers and employers will be required to follow

prequationary measures as the country grapples with the containment of the deadly COVID-19

employers shall provide the appropriate face masks for markers, according to the guidelines,

The employers shall provide the DOLE workers through each regional office, copy furnished

DOH, the monthly reporting of illness, disease, and injuries utilizing the DOLE work accident /

illness report form (WAIR). (Georgin et al., 2020)

Hundreds of thousands of new volunteers worldwide have joined national red cross and

red crescent society this year, providing vital support to their local communities during

pandemic 19. New and long standing volunteers have dedicated their time to wide ranging

COVID-19 response activities, including: delivering essential food and medical items and

transporting patients to health facilities supporting with testing and contract tracing providing

psychosocial support to vulnerable and quarantined people distributing personal protective

10

equipment (PPE) and providing trusted and accurate health information to their communities.

Collectively, they have reached tens million of people in nearly every country of the world,

while also responding to hundreds of other disasters the health and socioeconomic impact will

have a wider effect on the needs of extremely vulnerable communities. Including in the relation

to access to epidemic prevention measures, consistent and safe health services.( Pedison et al.,

2020)

The DOH is committed to accurate and timely reporting of verified information on the

covid 19 health situation. We have been preparing for the possibility of localized transmission in

the country. Now that there are confirmed cases of localized transmission ,DOH and the inter

agency task force are now implementing pre planned measures to respond to the situation health

secretary Francisco T. Duque lll said upon confirmation of new cases ,we immediately deployed

additional surveillance teams and commenced contract tracing. Call on the public to continue to

be vigilant and practice personal preventive measures such as proper hand hygiene ,social

distancing and cough etiquette the country continues to confront different issues brought about

by the coronavirus disease 2019 (covid 19) pandemic, the department of education (DepEd) is

addressing the challenges in the basic education for school year 2020-2021 through its basic

education learning continuity plan (BE-LCP) under depEd order .the BE-LCP aims to ensure the

health, safety and well being of the learners, teachers and personnel in the time of COVID-

19,while finding particular the BE-LCP has been designed with a legal framework responsive to

the new normal keeping in mind constitutional mandate to uphold the right of all citizens to

quality education at all times. in the line with this ,the learning delivery modalities that schools

can adopt may be one or a combination of the following, depending on the local health

conditions, the availability of resources and the particular context of the learners in the school or
11

locality. DOH is exhausting all its efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19. (Galvez- tan et al,

2019)

The city government here has been sharing its best practices in responding to the

coronavirus disease 2019( COVID-19)crisis with some local government units (LGUs)in Negros

Occidental and other provinces in Western Visayas. Bacolod officials move to stem the rising

COVID-19 cases in the city which has been reverted to modified enchanced community

quarantine.the city government will undertake this upon the advice of secretary carlito galvez

jr,chief implementer of the national task force against covid 19 who met with officials of

Bacolod City and Negros Occidental. (Morales et al, 2020 )

As the country continues to confront different issues brought about by the coronavirus

disease 2019 (covid 19) pandemic, the department of education (DepEd) is addressing the

challenges in the basic education for school year 2020-2021 through its basic education learning

continuity plan (BE-LCP) under depEd order .the BE-LCP aims to ensure the health, safety and

well being of the learners, teachers and personnel in the time of covid 19,while finding particular

the BE-LCP has been designed with a legal framework responsive to the new normal keeping in

mind constitutional mandate to uphold the right of all citizens to quality education at all times. in

the line with this ,the learning delivery modalities that schools can adopt may be one or a

combination of the following, depending on the local health conditions, the availability of

resources and the particular context of the learners in the school or locality. Hence, the BE-LCP

aims to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the learners, teachers, and personnel in the

time of COVID-19, while finding ways for education to continue amidst the crisis. In particular,

the BE-LCP has been designed with a legal framework responsive to the “new normal” keeping

in mind the constitutional mandate to uphold the right of all citizens to quality education at all
12

times. In line with this, the learning delivery modalities that schools can adopt may be one or a

combination of the following, depending on the local health conditions, the availability of

resources, and the particular context of the learners in the school or locality. (Bagnoslee et al.,

2020)

Effects of the Disease. Both terms refer to people who do not have symptoms. The

difference is that ‘asymptomatic’ refers to people who are infected but never develop any

symptoms, while ‘pre-symptomatic’ refers to infected people who have not yet developed

symptoms but go on to develop symptoms later.Whether or not they have symptoms, infected

people can be contagious and the virus can spread from them to other people.Laboratory data

suggests that infected people appear to be most infectious just before they develop symptoms

(namely 2 days before they develop symptoms) and early in their illness. People who develop

severe disease can be infectious for longer. While someone who never develops symptoms can

pass the virus to others, it is still not clear how frequently this occurs and more research is

needed in this area. School closures have clear negative impacts on child health, education and

development, family income and the overall economy. Slowing of the manufacturing of

essential goods, losses in national and international business, poor cash flow in the market,

cancellation or postponement of large-scale sports and tournaments, disruption of celebration of

cultural, religious and festive events, Closure of places for entertainment such as movies and

play theatres, sports clubs, gymnasiums, swimming pools, and so on and social distancing with

our peers and family members. Sedentary behaviour and low levels of physical activity can

have negative effects on the health, well-being and quality of life of individuals. Self-quarantine

can also cause additional stress and challenge the mental health of citizens.
13

Mode of Transmission. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease

caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The first case was

identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The disease has since spread worldwide,

leading to an going pandemic. The transmission of COVID-19 spread from person to person

mainly through the respiratory route the virus that cause COVID -19 spread primarily through

droplets generated with an infected persom coughs, sneezes or speaks. You can also become

infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before

washing hands.

Symptoms of Covid-19. Covid-19 affects different people in different ways. Most

infected people will develop mild to moderate illness and recover without hospitalization. Most

common symptoms are fever, dry cough and tiredness.Less common symptoms are aches,

pains, soar throat, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, headache, loss of taste or smell, a rash on skin and

discoloration of fingers and toes. Serious Symptoms are difficulty breathing or shortness of

breath, chest pain or pressure and loss of speech or movement. Seek immediate medical

attention if you have serious symptoms. Always call before visiting your doctor or health

facility. People with mild symptoms who are otherwise healthy should manage their symptoms

at home. On average it takes 5-6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for

symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days.

Synthesis

The current paper presents a synthesis of review literature discussing the applications for

the guide for preventing and addressing problem associated with the coronavirus disease 2019

(COVID-19) is intended to support governments, media and local organizations. Coronavirus

14

2019 pandemic caused high levels of mortality and continues to threaten the lives of the global

population. The spread of corona virus across the globe poses an enormous crisis and for the

governance. For the populace to follow standard infection prevention and control measure

adequately, governments need to gain trust of citizens by strengthening the health system and

improving surveillance activities in detecting cases to offer the optimum health services to their

communities.reviews as applied to understand preventative knowledge level and

health behaviors in the context of emergency preparedness and response.

Theoretical framework

A review of literature on adaptions addressed during the COVID-19 pandemic was

conducted to assess the current state of theory of knowledge consumption developed by Raju

Mathew. In spite of heavy investments, what the humaity is getting out of education, from the

schools, what the humanity is getting out of education, from schools, training centers and

universities and universities or research centers, is meagar and no way justifiable in terms of

returns thanks to the crude and outdated theories, strategies and approaches. New philosophy,

theories and strategies have been formulated to bring Revolutions in Education. This theory can

be applied in improving efficiency of simple and sophisticated skill acquisitions and

augmenting scientific productivity. Details of the strategy are dealt in the original text

‘Knowmatics - A New Revolution in Higher Education Journal of the World Universities

Forum. Mathew found that there exists a common structure and methods structure and methods

for all domain of knowledge and concepts are the basic building blocks of knowledge domains.

Knowledge processing technology can be built up on the basis of developing algoritms based on

knowledge structure for which he proposed Knowmatics in 2005.

15

Furthermore, this study recommended specifically health Beliefs model, Theory of

Planned behaviour, and Protection about theory with the support of (although not universal) for

their effectiveness in this context. Relating it to the present study it is very relevant to the said

theory to address the problem.

Conceptual Framework

The researcher proposed conceptual models for the various implications from this

study, step by step process. The first diagram contains Shs Students from VMA Global College

by the environment of the qualified respondents. The two side boxes which are the left and the

right under the respondents box are the variables. The left side of the box is the level of

knowledge towards the causes and effects which are the independent variable. While the right

side of the box  are the sex, grade level and strand which are the dependent variable.

The Dependent and Independent Variable are connected with arrows to show the Level of

METHODOLOGY

Research Design. Research is a study on a scientific principle that finds new information

of problems around us, specially today’s pandemic the COVID-19. The researcher conduct a

Descriptive design. This method of research which involves observing and describing behaviour

of a subject. According to Fraenkel (2012-7) the objective of the descriptive method is to

describe the result of observation, interview, questionnaires about the research systematically

and accurately. However, descriptive studies cannot explain why an event has occur and is

much suitable for a relatively new or unexplored research area (Punch, 2005).

Descriptive Research Design will be used to determine the SHS Students about Covid-

19 in terms of their know when they are taken as whole or grouped according to their

perception. Comparative Research Design will be used to determine whether the significant

problem exists in the Senior High School. Level of knowledge through causes and effects

towards Covid-19 in terms of awareness when they are taken also as whole or grouped

according to their perception.

Respondents of the Study. The respondents of the study 506 Senior High School of

VMA Global College and training center who are officially enrolled during the second

semester School Year 2019-2020.  Since the population is large, the researchers computed the

stratified random sampling that divides the elements of population into small grouped or strata

according to the section, strand and grade level.

Research Instrument. An online questionnaire-based survey was used for collecting

data related to the major aspect to a survey was created to evaluate the level of knowledge

towards covid-19 among the perceptions of respondents as a spontaneous reaction to the

situation. The researchers utilized the medium in acquiring the desired information from the

respondents. The researchers used a following scale measure for identification 1-Agree, 2-

Disagree, and 3- I don’t know will be given the same questionnaire and only one have

opportunity to answer it, to addressed that will perceive the problems to enhance the level of

knowledge towards Covid-19 among the respondents.

Validity. The term validity refers to the extent at which the survey measures right

elements that need to be measured. On the other hand, (Bond, 2003), validity be the core of any
19

form of assessment that is trustworthy and accurate. To determine the validity of the self-made

research questionnaire, the researcher have consulted a group of expert who were selected to

validate the research instrument of the study. The experts have checked the self-made or

developed by Carter Goods and Douglas Scates (1954).

Reliability. Define as the degree to which test scores for a group of test takers are

consistent over repeated applications of a measurement procedure and hence are inferred to be

dependable and repeatable for an individual test maker (Berkowitz et, al., 2000). In the case of

the researchers in order to guarantee the reliability of the research instruments the survey

questionnaires are distributed to a certain group of respondents an estimate of the reliability of a

measure usually in the form of a correlation coefficient.

Data Gathering Procedure. The researcher retrieves the request letter. The first step

before going to testing a paper is to make a request letter for the approval will be used in

gathering data. The Principal and SHS Coordinator, as well as class adviser and other Faculty

members were selected in the administrators in VMA Global College and Training Center, Inc.,

to permit or qualify the researcher conducted study for Gathering in data information towards

their knowledge to determine the level of knowledge about causes and effects towards Covid-

19.

Data Analysis Procedure. The researcher evaluates the level of knowledge towards

covid-19 which are the causes and effects. The survey will be summarized in statistical

treatment or statistical procedure that specify the frequency and percentage. For data analysis

this study utilizes the following statistical tools in order to prove and bring data collection to

the senior high school of VMA Global College in training Center, Inc. responses. To determine

20

if there is a significant about the knowledgeable level for the students in terms of causes and

effects when taken as a whole and grouped according to the respondent, Mean will be used for

the data gathering and analysis process.

Ethical Consideration. The researcher ensured the safety of all participants in the study

on its aim and gave their consent through this pandemic. The researcher conducts a self-made

survey questionnaire as the medium in acquiring the desired information from the respondents.

The researcher used the following scale and other ethical questions such as confidentiality of

information and possible potential harm analysis to the participants.
