TOPIC 4 PAPER ENGINEERING
4.1 Synopsis
This topic exposes students to paper engineering, especially in producing greeting cards and
pop-up books by integrating the basic techniques of geometric model construction. In addition,
students will be able to develop their creativity through hands-on activities.
4.2 Learning outcomes
1. Integrate basic techniques to build geometric models
2. Appreciate the role of geometry in art and design.
4.3 Topic Framework

4.4 'Paper Engineering'
Pop Up Engineering is a mechanism for producing geometric and non-geometric shapes in three
dimensions. Pop-up engineering applications can be seen in the production of greeting cards and
children's storybooks. The skills of cutting, shaping, folding and pasting are among the skills
required.

4.4.2 Pop-up techniques
a) There are various techniques in producing books or pop-up cards. Among them is the V-
folding technique. Among the most popular and simple types of V-folds are:
i) ‘valley fold’
ii) 'hill fold'
Try browsing the internet for information on other pop-up engineering techniques such as
'angled fold' and 'parallel fold'
b) Among the symbols used in the pop-up technique are shown

c) Steps of building an example pop-up card.
Step 1:
Make a · valley fold 'where the paper is folded into two equal parts.
Step 2:
Cutting Line
Cut two sections on the 'cutting line' as shown in the figure.
Step 3:
Fold hill
Lift the middle part that has been cut and make a hill fold to form a pole (stand)
Step 4:
Close and flatten the card flat

Step 5:
stand
When the card is opened, the inner wall will open and form a 90 ° angle · The vertical wall acts
as a pole (stand).
