EE102 Tutorial Week 2: 1. A Conductor Consists of A Circular Loop of Radius R and Two Straight, Long Sections, As

The document summarizes key concepts in magnetic fields: 1) For a circular loop carrying a current I, the magnetic field B at the center is expressed as a function of the current I and radius R. 2) For a current-carrying loop formed of radial lines and circular segments with center P, the magnitude and direction of B at P is found. 3) For a proton moving with velocity v in a magnetic field B, the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force it experiences is calculated along with its trajectory.

EE102 Tutorial

Week 2
1. A conductor consists of a circular loop of radius R and two straight, long sections, as
shown in Figure P30.6. The wire lies in the plane of the paper and carries a current I.
Find an expression for the vector magnetic field at the center of the loop.

2. Consider the current-carrying loop shown in Figure, formed of radial lines and
segments of circles whose centers are at point P. Find the magnitude and direction of B at
P.

3. A proton moves with a velocity of v = – 4 j m/s in a
^
region in which the magnetic field is B = 2 i T. What is
the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force this
charge experiences. Also draw its trajectory.

4. A rectangular coil consists of N = 100 closely wrapped turns and has dimensions a =
0.400 m and b = 0.300 m. The coil is hinged along the y axis, and its plane makes an
angle θ = 30.0° with the x axis (Fig. P29.23). What is the magnitude of the torque exerted
on the coil by a uniform magnetic field B = 0.800 T directed along the x axis when the
current is I = 1.20 A in the direction shown? What is the expected direction of rotation of
the coil?

5.A 25-turn circular coil of wire has diameter 1.00 m. It is placed with its axis along the
direction of the Earth’s magnetic field of 50.0 μT, and then in 0.200 s it is flipped 180°.
An average emf of what magnitude is generated in the coil?

6. Figure shows a top view of a bar that can slide without friction. The resistor is 6.00 Ω
and a 2.50-T magnetic field is directed perpendicularly downward, into the paper. Let
ℓ = 1.20 m. (a) Calculate the applied force required to move the bar to the right at a
constant speed of 2.00 m/s. (b) At what rate is energy delivered to the resistor??
