The Four Seasons Spring Nink
The Four Seasons Spring Nink
The four Seasons’ were a collection of four painting by Nicholas Poussin depicting the four
seasons, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. The painting above is Spring out of the four
seasons. The collection was painted by Nicholas Poussin and were created between 1660
and 1664. Nicholas poussin was a leading artist of Baroque style. This style was utilised in
the Four seasons paintings which were oil based. Poussin had created many other religious
works during the same time period as well the Four Season collection. The Four Seasons,
Spring painting depicts a mythical scene of the creation of the four season during creation.
The artist arranges the painting with Adam and Eve in the bottom of the painting and the
Creator in the top right. Trees and green foliage occupies vast amounts of the paintings
foreground, if the painting is not covered by greenery parts of the sky is featured. Towards
the top right of the painting the Creator is on a cloud. This provides context and provides a
visual relation to what the possible scene could have looked like. The trees are blossoming
and the sky is vibrantly blue with a slight overall darkened tone to emphasise the setting of
it being during spring in the Garden of Eden. And by how sky as I f f f f f h h k l t e s g y v
The artist, Poussin has painted Spring in the Garden of Eden from the part of the myth of
creation before the forbidden fruit was eaten by Adam and Eve. This is evident as they are
both completely bare and naked and appear to have no shame. There is also no snake
visible in the painting, a commonly used identifier for the context and time a religious
painting is from. Adam and Eve are also found pointing and looking above the towards the
trees above them. For Adam he is looking at the foliage above them which was the Tree of
Knowledge but to Eve it was where the forbidden fruit lay. It is also obvious that it is set in
the season of spring by the colour choices Poussin choose. The dark green of the vegetation
surrounding Adam and Eve is a perfect representation of the colour of trees during the
spring time as they are full of nutrients. Sun is also seen peeking through gaps of the trees in
the bottom left of the painting this could signify the being as spring like the beginning of a
new day. As spring is where the vegetation regrows after it fell during winter months. And
The painting provides more detail into the myth. A detail added is whether the Creator was
constantly above Adam and Eve watching over there every move. Another insight could also
be a bit contradicting to my previous point however, the Creator is facing away from Adam
and Eve this could be due to multiple reasons. The Creator could be watching others on the
earth in possibly another Garden of Eden or could be turning away to provide freedom for
Adam and Eve to make poor decisions. As if to provide intel that the Creator predicted
Adam and Eves defiance to Gods word later on during the creation of the word. The painting
collection also shows a philosophical reflection of the interpretation people had in the
1600’s of the power and might of nature and the changes in each season. And by how sky
