Subject:- Chemistry
Marks:- 35
Name :- ___Taha Abid Abbasi___________________________
Time Allowed:- 40 mins.

Marks:______

Q.1. a) What would you expect to see if zinc metal was placed in to copper sulfate solution? /1

Ans. I would observe copper metal being formed.

b) What are the products formed in this reaction? Write balanced chemical equation. /1

Ans. 2Zn+Cu2+ =Zn2+ 2Cu

Q.2. a. Complete the following equations by writing balanced symbolic equations to show what
happens when metals are heated with oxides of other metals.

i) magnesium + copper oxide /1

Ans. Mg + CuO = MgO + Cu

ii) Iron (III) oxide and zinc /1

Ans. 3Zn + Fe2O3 = 3ZnO +2Fe

b. When iron oxide is heated with aluminium powder, the following reaction takes place:

Aluminium + iron (III) oxide → iron + aluminium oxide

When aluminium oxide is heated with iron no reaction takes place.

i) Which of the two metals is more reactive? /1

Ans. Aluminium

ii) Write a balanced symbolic equation to show the reaction between aluminium and iron oxide. /1

Ans. 2Al + Fe2O = Al2O + 2Fe

iii) Window frames made from aluminium do not corrode as quickly as windows made form iron.
Explain this statement using the information above. /2

Ans. It is because carbon is above iron in the reactivity series so it displaces iron causing rust, but as
Aluminum is above carbon it cannot be displaced thus it does not corrode as quickly as iron.
iv. Use the quation you have written in (b) (ii) and tell;

which substance is oxidized /1

Ans. Iron

which substance is reduced /1

Ans. Aluminum

which substance is oxidizing agent /1

Ans. Iron

which substance is reducing agent /1

Ans. Aluminium

Q.3. Iron is a useful metal. One problem with using iron is that it can rust.
(a) (i) Name the iron compound present in rust. /1

Ans. Iron Oxide.

(ii) Name the two substances that iron reacts with when it rusts. /2

Ans. Oxygen and water

(b) What type of reaction occurs in the rusting of iron? /1

combustion
decomposition
displacement
oxidation

Ans. Oxidation

(c) Galvanising can prevent iron from rusting. In this process, the iron is coated with another metal.
(i) Identify the other metal. /1

Ans. zinc

(d) Explain two other methods used to prevent iron from rusting. /2
Ans. By painting the surface.

2. coating the surface with oil or grease.

Q.4. The diagrams show the reactions of some metals with cold water and with dilute hydrochloric
acid.

(a) Answer the following questions, using only the metals that appear in the diagrams.
(i) Name two metals that react with cold water. /2

Ans. Calcium, Magnesium

(ii) Name one metal that reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid but not with cold water. /1

Ans. Zinc

(iii) Arrange the five metals in order of reactivity. Most reactive metal first /3

Ans. Calcium

Magnesium

Zinc

Iron

Copper

(b) Some magnesium powder is added to dilute sulfuric acid in a test tube.
A colourless solution is formed and a gas is given off. When more magnesium is added, the reaction
continues fora while and then stops, leaving some magnesium powder in the test tube.
When a flame is placed at the mouth of the test tube, the gas burns with a squeaky pop.
(i) Identify the gas produced. /1

Ans. Hydrogen

ii) Suggest why the reaction stops. /1

Ans. Because all the magnesium powder has reacted completely with the acid.

(iii) State the name of the colourless solution. /1

Ans. Magnesium hydroxide

(iv) How could you separate the magnesium powder from the colourless solution? /1

Ans.

(c) In some fireworks, magnesium powder reacts quickly with oxygen in the air. During this reaction
heat energy is produced.
(i) What name is given to reactions in which heat energy is produced? /1

Ans. Exothermic reactions

(ii) Name the compound formed when magnesium reacts with oxygen. /1

Ans. Magnesium Oxide.

Q.5. The table gives information about the first five elements in Group 2 of the Periodic Table.

Use the information in the table to help you answer the questions.
(i) Suggest how barium reacts with cold water and with air. /2
Reaction with cold water

Ans. No reaction is observed

Reaction with air

Ans. It quickly reacts with the oxygen present in the air

(ii) Use your answer to (i) to suggest how barium should be stored. /1

Ans. It should be stored in an air tight seal or dipped in oil

(iii) Suggest a connection between the atomic number and the reactivity of the elements in Group 2. /1
The atomic numbers in group 2 reactivity series are going in an ascending order.
