SC.K.E.5.4 Observe that sometimes the Moon can be seen at night and sometimes during the
day.
Standard-Based Objective
With paper and pencil, students will go outside and observe the daytime sky and come up with
two possible predictions as to why the moon is seen during the day and night but not the sun.
3) Open (time: 10-15 minutes) Quietly on a walk outside to where the moon is visible to the
students, have the students take a seat on the ground and tell them to look up at the sky and
ask what they see in the sky at that moment. If the moon isn't visible that day, have a picture of
the moon during the day ready for the students to see.
Body (Time: 10 minutes) When a student says they see the moon (they may need help) tell
them to pair up in groups and pass out a paper and pencil for each group to use for the
upcoming activity. Ask the students why they think the moon is out right now with the sun but
at night, the moon is out by itself and not the sun. Have the students come up with two
predictions as to why they think the moon is visible in the daytime and nighttime.
Closing:(Time:20-25 minutes) After every group has come up with two predictions, have each
group share their answer to the class. After they share, explain to the students that the moon
has no light and because of its rotation around the earth the sun shines its light on the moon
which cause it to have phases which make it visible throughout the night. Lastly students will
watch a fun video of what they just learned. https://youtu.be/-Oyv3Qg4a8k

Differentiation
ESL: Pair up with group of three instead of two and have them work with partners. If needed
translating device will be provided.
Learning Disability: Have student draw the shape of the moon and one prediction as to why it
changes shape.
Gifted: Pair student up with a partner and have them work together on what the class is
working on as well as one prediction as to how they think the moon revloves around the earth.
