AE383 Fall2020 HW1

This document is a homework assignment for an Aerospace Engineering course. It contains 3 questions asking students to 1) identify if systems of equations are linear/nonlinear, static/dynamic, time-varying/time-invariant, 2) write the equations of motion for a given system, and 3) write the equations for an energy harvesting floor system. Students are asked to explain their answers. The homework is due on Friday, June 11, 2020 at 23:59.

Homework # 1
Due: Friday, 06/11/2020 23:59

1) Consider the systems for which the equations are given below where 𝑢 is the input, 𝑦 is the
output, and 𝑡 is time. Are these systems linear or nonlinear, static or dynamic, time varying or
time invariant? Explain your answers (2pts)

a) 𝑦̈ + 𝑦̇ + 𝑦 = 𝑢̇ + 𝑢 f) 𝑦̈ + 𝑦 2 + sin(𝑡) = 𝑢
b) 𝑦̈ + 2 sin(𝑡) 𝑦̇ = 𝑢 g) 𝑦̈ + 2𝑦 = 𝑢
c) 𝑦̈ + 2 sin(𝑡) 𝑦̇ + 𝑦 = 𝑢 h) 𝑦̈ = 𝑡𝑢
d) 𝑦 − sin⁡(𝑦) = 𝑢 i) 𝑦 + 2𝑦 = 𝑢
e) 𝑦̈ + 2 = 𝑢 j) 𝑦 = 2𝑡

2) Write down the equations of motion for the given system (4pts)

3) The schematic for an energy harvesting floor is given below. This system simply harvests
electricity from the motion of the dancing people on it. The linear motion for the tile with mass m
is transferred to the electrical circuit by a gear. Write down the equations for this system (4pts)
