Q1.How different was the scene in the classroom on the day of the last lesson?
Ans:- The usual hustle and bustle of the morning hours could not be seen on the day of the last
lesson. It was all very still and quiet as it used to be on a Sunday morning. The din of opening and
closing of desks and the rapping of the teacher's ruler on the table could not be heard. The
students had already taken their places and even the village elders had gathered there.
Q2. How did Douglas make sure that he had conquered the old terror?
Ans:-Douglas felt that when he was alone in the pool, tiny vestiges of old fear would return. To
make sure that he had got rid of his fear of water, he went to Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire,
dived off a dock at Triggs Islands and swam two miles across the lake to Stamp Act Island. After
this, he became confident that he had conquered his long standing fear of water.
Q3. What were the terms of the indigo contract between British landlords and Indian
peasants?
Ans:-The arable land in the Champaran district was divided into estates which were owned by
Englishmen and worked by Indian tenants. The chief commercial crop was indigo. The landlords
compelled all tenants to plant 15 per cent of their holdings with indigo and surrender the entire
indigo harvest as rent.
Q4. The walls of classroom are decorate dwith picture of Shakespeare, buildings of domes,
world maps and beautiful valleys. How do these contrast with the world of these children?
Ans:-‘Shakespeare’ symbolises the study of literature, 'buildings and domes' symbolise power and
wealth, the world maps represent the world outside and 'beautiful valleys' refer to nature's beauty
and bounty. All these stand in sharp contrast to the dingy, dismal and gloomy atmosphere in which
these slum children live.
Q5. According to poet , what is it that human beings can learn from Nature?
Ans:-Earth can teach a lesson to mankind on the preservation and resurrection of life and how
new life is believed to rise from the ashes of the dead remains. The Earth never attains total
inactivity. Nature remains at work under apparent stillness and keeps the Earth alive. Life never
ceases on earth when everything appears to be dead only one thing remains alive and that is
earth itself.
Q6. For Aunt Jennifer, what do the tigers symbolize?
Ans:-Aunt Jennifer is creating tigers, which are a symbol of strength, fearlessness and
confidence. These are the qualities that Aunt Jennifer lacks in herself. These tigers represent Aunt
Jennifer's suppressed desires to become bold and fearless, and free from oppression. The poet
wants to suggest that women need to have these qualities to fight against their oppressors.
Q7.Would Charley ever go back to the ticket- counter on thethird level to buy tickets to
Galesburg for himself and his wife?
Ans:-Time travel is a temporary relief that man seeks to escape from the rush of his present
existence. It was a world of fantasy that Charley too had created. So, he exchanged all his savings
for 1894 currency to buy tickets from the third level to Galesburg, Illinois. However, he could not
find the third level again as it did not exist.
Q8. Who is Mr. Lamb? How does Derry get into his garden?
Ans:-Mr. Lamb is an old man who lives in a big house and has a big garden. He is lame with a tin-
leg. He had lost his leg in the war. Derry enters Mr. Lamb's garden by climbing the wall He does
not come there to steal the apples like other children but out of sheer curiosity.
Q9. What were the contents of the small brown suitcase that Mclerry carried?
Ans:-The small brown suitcase that McLeery carried contained all that he would need for his
'morning duties' meaning his invigilation work. It contained the sealed question paper, envelope, a
yellow invigilation form, special authentication card etc.
