Tutorial 1: LPP (Formulation only)

1. An advertising company wishes to plan its advertising strategy in three different

media – television, radio and magazine. The purpose of advertising is to reach as
large number of potential customers as possible. The following data are
available:
TV Radio Magazine
Cost of an advertising unit Rs. 30000 Rs. 20000 Rs. 25000
No. of potential customers reached 2,00,000 6,00,000 2,50,000
per unit
No. of female customers reached 1,50,000 4,00,000 1,20,000
per unit
The company wants to spend not more than Rs. 4,50,000 on advertising. The
following requirements must be met:
(i) The no. of ad units on TV and radio each should be between 5 and 12.
(ii) At least 10,00,000 exposures take place amongst female customers.
(iii) Advertising in magazines be limited to Rs. 2,50,000.
(iv) At least 5 ad units be bought in magazines.
Formulate the LP model.
2. Universal Mines operates three mines in Orissa. The ore from each mine is
separated into two grades before it is shipped. The daily production capacity of
mines, as well as their daily operating costs are as follows:
High-Grade ore Low-Grade ore Operating costs
(tons/day) (tons/day)
Mine A 4 4 20000
Mine B 6 4 22000
Mine C 1 6 18000
Company has committed itself to deliver 54 tons of high-Grade ore and 65 tons
of Low-Grade ore by the end of the week. It also has labour contracts that
guarantee employees in each mine a full day’s pay for each day or fraction of a
day if mine is open. Determine the number of days each mine should be
operated during the upcoming week if the Universal Mines is to fulfill its
commitment at minimum total cost.
3. Metal Arts produces four different metal products, each of which must be

cost (in Rs.) for shipping a module from a factory to a manufacturer is as shown
in the table.
Semiconductor Module
Plant I II III IV

possibly subcontract with other tool shops. The result is an increase in the
production cost per unit, as shown in the following table. Market demand
restricts the ratio of chisels to wrenches to at least 2:1.
Weekly Production Unit Cost
Range (Units) (Rs.)
Wrenches Chisels Wrenches Chisels
Regular 0-550 0-620 20 21
