This page transmits Revision 3 to CFM56-5B Service Bulletin 72-0506 dated March
05, 2007, Revision 1 dated August 07, 2009 and Revision 2 dated July 09, 2018.

This Service Bulletin has been revised to modify configuration chart and
correct the surface finish (roughness) of the painted areas in accomplishment
instructions.

Consequently, the following paragraphs have been updated:


- 1.A.Effectivity; to update effectivity and add note.

- 2.C.Configuration Chart; to modify configuration chart based on engine


configurations and applicability.

- 3.ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS; to update ESM, SPM references and consumable


and to correct the surface finish (roughness) of the painted areas.
Engines that have previously complied with this Service Bulletin are not
affected.

All changes are shown with a vertical dash in the left-hand margin. A change,
which does not affect the technical content, may not be highlighted in the
Transmittal Sheet.

This Service Bulletin is reissued in its entirety.

are affected.

338-003-505-0 are reidentified as 338-003-508-0 and 338-003-509-0
after rework.

NOTE: * Only applicable for Fan and Booster Stage 5 Vane Assy
338-003-505-0 and 338-003-509-0.

B. Description
This Service Bulletin announces the rework and re-identification of
the old fan and booster vane assy to prevent the corrosion. Refer to
(Figure 1).

C. Compliance
Category 7:

Do at customer convenience.

Impact E:

This recommendation is to improve the cost of ownership, reduce


maintenance requirements or is a product improvement.

NOTE: This Service Bulletin can be accomplished in shop.

D. Concurrent Requirements

E. Reason

(1) Objective:

To improve the reliability.

(2) Condition:

Corrosion pitting.

(3) Cause:

The surface of the fan and booster vane assy has a bad behavior of
the corrosion.

(4) Improvement:

Stop the corrosion with the deoxidation procedure and apply


anti-corrosion paint to protect the surface of the fan and booster
vane assy.

(5) Substantiation:

Substantiation is by analysis.

F. Approval
The technical content of this document is approved by the FAA and under
the authority of DOA No. EASA.21J.086.

G. Manpower
An estimated six man-hours for each engine is required to accomplish
this Service Bulletin.

H. Weight and Balance


The fan and booster stage 5 vane assy increase weight by 0.253 lb (0,115
kg).

NOTE: Changes introduced by this Service Bulletin have no effect on the


disassembly/assembly of fan and booster stage 5 vane assy.

A. Remove the old Fan and Booster Stage 5 Vane Assy 338-003-504-0 or
338-003-505-0 from the fan and booster assy. Refer to Engine Shop
Manual 72-21-00-030-001, Disassembly 001.

B. Do the rework of the Fan and Booster Stage 5 Vane Assy 338-003-504-0 or
338-003-505-0 as follows:

WARNING: PROTECTIVE OIL IS VERY FLAMMABLE. TAKE ALL NECESSARY


PROTECTIONS AGAINST FIRE.

CAUTION: IF REPAIR PROCEDURE IS INTERRUPTED FOR MORE THAN 24 HOURS,


PROTECT PART USING WATER-REPELLENT (CP5073) .

(1) Preparation of the part:

(a) Remove the abradable coating from inner shroud of fan


and booster vane assemblies. Refer to Engine Shop Manual
72-21-09-300-002, Repair 002.

(b) Remove the abradable coating from outer shroud of fan


and booster vane assemblies. Refer to Engine Shop Manual
72-21-09-300-003, Repair 003.

(c) Remove the riveted self locking nuts of the rear flange. Refer
to Engine Shop Manual 72-21-09-300-004, Repair 004.

(2) Descaling of the part:

(a) Descale the part. Refer to Standard Practice Manual 70-21-31,


DESCALING FERROUS ALLOYS - CLEAN WITH CHEMICAL AGENT, TASK
70-21-31-110-007.

(b) Do a visual inspection of the non painted areas to make sure


there are no oxidation marks and/or pits. If there are no
oxidation marks and/or pits, refer to paragraph 3.B.(3).

(c) Remove oxidation marks with a nylon brush.

(d) If there are still oxidation marks and/or pits, refer to


paragraph 3.B.(2).

(3) Cleaning of the part:

WARNING: DO NOT BREATHE THE PARTICLES FROM BLASTING OR LET


THE PARTICLES TOUCH YOU. THE PARTICLES CAN CAUSE
DAMAGE, INJURY OR IRRITATION TO YOU. USE PERSONAL
PROTECTION EQUIPMENT. USE LOCAL MECHANICAL EXHAUST
VENTILATION OR AN APPROVED RESPIRATOR.

(a) Do a dry abrasive blast on the part. Refer to Standard


Practice Manual 70-51-11, DRY ABRASIVE BLAST - FINE - ABRASIVE
BLAST, TASK 70-51-11-120-012 or to Standard Practice Manual
70-51-12, DRY ABRASIVE BLAST - MEDIUM - ABRASIVE BLAST, TASK
72-51-12-120-013.

(b) Do a visual inspection to make sure that the surfaces to be


painted are clean.

WARNING: ACETONE IS EXPLOSIVE, AN IRRITANT, AN ALLERGEN AND


HAS POISONOUS DETERIORATION. USE PERSONAL PROTECTION
EQUIPMENT. USE VAPOR/FUME CONTROL OR RESPIRATOR.

(c) If necessary, clean the surfaces to be painted with a cloth


soaked in ACETONE (CP1039) or ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (CP1041) .

(4) Alternative procedure available. Painting of the parts:

(a) Mask the areas not to be painted with PERMACEL 201 (CP2241) or
3M-2525 TAPE (CP2696) . Refer to (Figure 2).

CAUTION: YOU MUST APPLY THE FIRST COAT OF PAINT NOT MORE THAN 6
HOURS AFTER YOU ABRASIVE BLAST THE PART.

CAUTION: TOTAL THICKNESS OF THE PAINT MUST BE WITHIN 0.0012 -


0.0020 IN. (0,03 - 0,05 MM).

(b) Apply aluminium paint on the part. Use SERMETEL W (CP2227)


. Refer to Standard Practice Manual 70-64-13, APPLICATION OF
MINERAL BASE ALUMINUM PAINT - SERMETEL W - PAINT AND APPLY
MARKING, TASK 70-64-13-380-014 and refer to (Figure 2).

(c) Remove the masking material.

CAUTION: PRESSURE OF MEDIA MUST BE LESS OR EQUAL TO 22 PSI (150


KPA).

CAUTION: REMOVAL OF PAINT MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 0.00020 IN.


(0.005 MM).

(d) Burnish the part. Refer to Standard Practice Manual 70-52-11,


SURFACE STRESSING BY GLASS BEAD PEENING - SHOT-PEEN, TASK
70-52-11-380-002. Use GLASS BEAD SIZE 11 (CP2105) .

(e) Electrical conductivity of the burnished paint must be less


than 20 ohms across the two electrodes of an ohmmeter, 1
inch (25,4 mm) apart minimum. Spherical tip electrodes are
recommended not to damage the paint.

(f) After complete polymerization of the paint, make sure that


the surface finish (roughness) of the painted areas is 118
microinches (3 micrometers) or better for the other area. Use
a contour meter which has a cutoff compatible with the curve
radius to perform the measurement.

(5) Alternative procedure. Painting of the parts:

(a) Mask the areas not to be painted, with PERMACEL 201 (CP2241) or
3M-2525 TAPE (CP2696) . Refer to (Figure 2).

CAUTION: YOU MUST APPLY THE FIRST COAT OF PAINT NOT MORE THAN
6 HOURS AFTER YOU ABRASIVE BLAST THE PART.

CAUTION: TOTAL THICKNESS OF THE PAINT MUST BE WITHIN 0.0014 -


0.0030 IN. (0,035 - 0,075 MM).

(b) Apply aluminum paint on the part. Use MADERBIND CF (CP2919)


. Refer to Standard Practice Manual 70-64-26, APPLICATION OF
MINERAL BASE ALUMINUM PAINT – MADERBIND CF - PAINT AND APPLY
MARKING, Task 70-64-26-381-601. Refer to (Figure 2).

(c) Remove the masking material.

CAUTION: PRESSURE OF MEDIA MUST BE LESS OR EQUAL TO 29 PSI


(200 KPA).

CAUTION: REMOVAL OF PAINT MUST NOT EXCEED 0.00040 IN. (0,010


MM).

(d) Burnish the part. Refer to Standard Practice Manual


70-51-12, DRY ABRASIVE BLAST - MEDIUM - ABRASIVE BLAST, Task
70-51-12-120-013. Use CORUNDUM 50 MICROMETERS (CP2210) .

(e) Electrical conductivity of the burnished paint must be less


than 5 ohms across the two electrodes of an ohmmeter, 1
inch (25,4 mm) apart minimum. Spherical tip electrodes are
recommended not to damage the paint.

(f) Make sure that the surface finish (roughness) is 118


microinches (3 micrometers) or better.

(6) Recondition the abradable coating on inner shroud. Refer to Engine


Shop Manual 72-21-09-300-002, Repair 002.

(7) Recondition the abradable coating on outer shroud. Refer to Engine


Shop Manual 72-21-09-300-003, Repair 003.

(8) Install the riveted self locking nuts on rear flange of the stage
5 vane assy. Refer to Engine Shop Manual 72-21-09-300-004, Repair
004.

CAUTION: TOUCH-UP AREA MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 5% OF TOTAL COATED AREA.

(9) If necessary, do a spot touch up of repair damaged painted areas.


Refer to Standard Practice Manual 70-64-13, APPLICATION OF MINERAL
BASE ALUMINUM PAINT - SERMETEL W - PAINT AND APPLY MARKING, TASK
70-64-13-380-014. Use SERMETEL 196 (CP2272) .

(10) Re-identification of the part:

(a) For parts listed in the column “Old Part Number”, reidentify
the part with the Part Number listed in the column “New
Part Number”. Refer to Standard Practice Manual 70-10-12,
VIBRO-PEEN MARKING - MARKING, TASK 70-10-12-350-005 and to
(Figure 2).

C. Install the new Fan and Booster Stage 5 Vane Assy 338-003-508-0 or
338-003-509-0 on the fan and booster assy. Refer to Engine Shop Manual
72-21-00-440-001, Assembly 001.
