Hello, Grade 8 learners! In this module, you will learn how to:

• Illustrate the equivalences of (a) the statement and its contrapositive

(b) the converse and inverse of a statement.

You can say that you have understood the lessons in this module if you can
already:

• Illustrate the equivalences of the statement and its contrapositive

• Illustrate the equivalences of the converse and inverse of a statement

Read each item carefully. Then choose the letter that corresponds to the correct
answer.

1. Which is the converse of p -> q?

A. p -> q C. not p -> not q
B. q -> p D. not q -> not p

2. Which is the inverse of p -> q?

B. If Sophia can make delicious foods, then she loves to cook.
C. If Sophia cannot make delicious foods, then she does not love to
cook.
D. If Sophia does not love to cook, then she cannot make delicious
foods.

8. In the inverse statement below, what is the contrapositive statement?

Lesson: ILLUSTRATING EQUIVALENCES OF THE STATEMENT AND ITS
CONTRAPOSITIVE AND THE CONVERSE AND INVERSE OF A
STATEMENT

A. Using the If-Then statement below, create its converse, inverse, and
contrapositive.

IF-THEN STATEMENT
If a horse has a horn, then it is a unicorn.
CONVERSE STATEMENT

INVERSE STATEMENT

CONTRAPOSITIVE STATEMENT

B. From the converse statement that you created in letter A, write is its inverse
and contrapositive statements.

C. From the inverse statement that you created in letter A, write is its converse
and contrapositive statements.

CONTRAPOSITIVE STATEMENT

D. From the converse statement that you created, write is its inverse and
contrapositive statements.

CONTRAPOSITIVE STATEMENT

CONVERSE STATEMENT

INVERSE STATEMENT

In writing an If-Then statement, the symbol is p -> q where p is the

hypothesis and q is the conclusion.

If-Then : If Juan loves to eat vegetables, then he is healthy.

(p->q)

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

In writing a Converse statement, the symbol is q -> p wherein the
hypothesis and the conclusion are switched.

Converse : If Juan is healthy, then he loves to eat vegetables.

(q->p)

In writing an Inverse statement, the symbol is -p -> -q wherein the

hypothesis and the conclusion are both negated or stated in the opposite
way.

Inverse : If Juan does not love to eat vegetables, then he is

unhealthy. (-p->-q)

In writing a Contrapositive statement, the symbol is –q -> -p wherein the

hypothesis and the conclusion are switched and are both negated or
stated in the opposite way.

Contrapositive : If Juan is unhealthy, then he does not love to eat

vegetables. (-q->-p)

1. What is the converse of an inverse statement?

In the example, the inverse is If Juan does not love to eat vegetables,

then he is unhealthy. The converse of this statement is If Juan is unhealthy,

then he does not love to eat vegetables. Therefore, the converse of an inverse

statement is the CONTRAPOSITIVE STATEMENT.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

2. What is the contrapositive of a converse statement?

In the example, the converse statement is If Juan is healthy, then he

loves to eat vegetables. The contrapositive of this statement is If Juan does not

love to eat vegetables, then he is unhealthy. Therefore, the contrapositive of a

converse statement is the INVERSE STATEMENT.

3. What is the inverse of a contrapositive statement?

In this example, the contrapositive statement is If Juan is unhealthy, then

he does not love to eat vegetables. The inverse of this statement is If Juan is

healthy, then he loves to eat vegetables. Therefore, the inverse of a

contrapositive statements is the CONVERSE STATEMENT.

How will you write conditional statements in symbols?

What is the inverse of q -> p?

ANSWER : In an inverse statement, the original statement is negated in which

the first and the second parts of the sentence are negated or stated

opposite in meaning. Therefore the inverse of q -> p is

-q -> -p.

What is the converse of -q -> p?

ANSWER : In a converse statement, the first and the second parts of the

sentence are switched. Therefore the converse of -q -> p is

p -> -q.
