1. The components of a vector are given by (a) Ax = +3, Ay = +5, (b) Ax = –3, Ay = –5 (c) Ax = – 3,
Ay = +5 and (d) Ax = +3, Ay = – 5 ; Construct the vectors, find their magnitude & directions and show
them in figure.

2. Given that A = 2i +3j + 5k and B = 2i +3j – 3k, Find (a) the Dot product between A &B and find the
angle between them (b) the cross product between A&B and prove that A × B=–(B × A) (c) the value
of A . (B× A).
3. Check whether the vectors A = –3i +2j + 4k and B = –3i +4j + 5k are parallel or perpendicular to
each other. If none of them, find the angle between them.

4. Find the magnitude and direction of the vector sum of the following three forces using the component
method.

5. Find the angles made by the vectors A = 5i – 2j + 3k with the axes.

6. An airplane flies 20 km in a direction of 60º north of east, then 30 km straight east, then 10 km straight
north. How far and in what direction is the plane from the starting point?

7. A train starts from rest at a station and accelerate at a rate of 2 m/s 2 for 5 s. It then runs at constant
speed for 20 s, and slows down at -5m/s2 until it stops at the next station. Find the total distance covered.
8. An airplane taking off from a landing field has a run of 400m. If it starts from rest, moves with constant
acceleration and makes the run in 20 sec, with what velocity did it take off?

9. A spaceship takes a straight line path from the earth to the moon, a distance of about 400000 km.
Suppose it accelerates at 5 m/s2 for the first 10 min of the trip, then travels at constant speed until the
last 10 min, when it accelerates at – 5 m/s2, just coming to rest as it reaches the moon (a) What is the
maximum speed attained? (b) What total time required for the trip?

10. A ball is thrown vertically upward from the ground with a velocity of 20m/s (a)How long will it take to
rise to its highest point? (b) How high does the ball rise? (c) How long after projection will the ball have
a velocity of 10 m/s upward?

11. A ball rolls off the edge of a tabletop 2m above the floor and strikes the floor at a point 3m horizontally
from the edge of the table. (a) Find the time of flight (b) Find the initial velocity (c) Find the magnitude
and direction of the velocity of the ball just before it strikes the floor.

12. A ball is projected with an initial upward velocity component of 30m/s and a horizontal velocity
component of 25m/s. (a) Find the position and velocity of the ball after 3s (b) How much time is required
to reach the highest point? (c) How high is this point? (d) How much time is required for the ball to
return to its original level? (e) How far has it traveled horizontally during this time?
13. A batted baseball leaves the bat at an angle of 30° above the horizontal and is caught by an
outfielder 400 m from the plate. (a) What was the initial speed of the ball? (b) How high did it rise?
(c) How long was it in air?

14. A constant horizontal force of 30N acts on a body on a smooth horizontal table. The body starts
from the rest and is observed to move 100m in 3s.
(a) What is the mass of the body?
(b) If the force ceases to act at the end of 3s, how far will the body move in the next 3s?
15. A 0.22 rifle bullet, traveling at 360ms-1, strikes a block of soft wood, which it penetrates to a depth
of 0.2 m. The mass of the bullet is 2 g. Assume a constant retarding force.
(a) How much time was required for the bullet to stop?
(b) What was the accelerating force?

16. A body of mass 15 kg rests on a frictionless horizontal plane and is acted on by a horizontal force
of 20 N.
(a) What acceleration is produced?
(b) How far will the body travel in 10 s?
(c) What will be its velocity at the end of 10 s?
17. The mass of the moon is about one eighty-first, and its radius one-fourth, that of the earth. What is
the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon?
18. A block whose mass is 10 kg rests on a horizontal table. What constant horizontal force T is required
to give it a velocity of 4 ms-1 in 2 s. Assume that the block starts from rest, the friction between
the surface of table and block is 10N.

19. A body of mass 2kg is initially at rest on a horizontal surface. If a horizontal force of 25N pushes it
4m, using work energy relationship, find the velocity.
20. A body of mass 8kg moves in a straight line on horizontal surface. At one point in its path its speed
is 4ms-1. After it has traveled 3m its speed is 5ms-1 in the same direction. Use work-energy
relationship and find the force acting on the body.

21. What is the potential energy of an 800 kg elevator at the top of the Empire State Building 380 m
above the street level? Assume the potential energy to the street level to be zero.

22. The force in Newton required to stretched a certain spring a distance of x m beyond its unstretched
length is given by F = 100x.
(a) What force will stretch the spring 0.1 m? 0.2 m?0.4 m?
(b) How much work is required to stretch the spring 0.1 m? 0.2 m?0.4 m?
23. A 5 kg block is lifted vertically at a constant velocity of 4 m/s through a height of 12 m.
(a) How great a force is required?
(b) How much work is done? What becomes of this work?
24. A bullet having a mass of 0.05 kg, moving with a velocity of 400 m/s, penetrates a distance of 0.1
m in to a wooden block firmly attached to the earth. Compute (a) the acceleration of the bullet
(b) the force (c) the time of acceleration (d) the impulse of collision.
25. On a frictionless table, a 3-kg block moving 4 ms-1 to the right collides with a 8-kg block moving 2
ms-1 to the left.
(a)If the blocks stick together, what is the final velocity?
(b)If the two blocks make a completely elastic head-on collision, what are their final velocities?
