CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discussed the research design, locale of the study,

respondents/participants of the study, research instruments, data gathering, and data

analysis of this study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used Mixed Methods Research because it served to answer the

questions and the purposes of the study.

Mixed Methods Research is a methodology for conducting research that involves

collecting, analyzing, and integrating quantitative and qualitative research. In other words,

only a selected part of the population is studied and findings from this are expected to be

generalized to the entire population (Nworgu, 1991:68).

LOCALE OF THE STUDY

The study was conducted in the selected government agencies and private

organizations in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte. Iligan, officially the City of Iligan is highly

urbanized in the Northern Mindanao region, Philippines. It is geographically within the

province of Lanao del Norte but administered independently from the province. It was

once part of Central Mindanao (Region 12) until the province was moved under Northern

Mindanao (Region 10).

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The selected government agencies and private organizations in Iligan City were

the main sources to get the desired respondents in conducting the study. The

researchers limited 30 respondents plus the 3 interviewees in all the selected agencies

and organizations.

The study does not amplify employees who are not Muslims.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The chief instrument that the researchers used in this study for gathering data or

information from the respondents are the questionnaire. The researchers made a

questionnaire that resent questions and several choices in such a way that respondents

checked or marked their answers which correspond to their agreement or

disagreement with the statement given.

The questionnaire was composed of two parts. Part 1 solicited the basic

information about the profile of the respondents, while part 2 was used to ask

questions regarding the stereotyping of Non-Muslim employees towards Muslim

applicants in selected organizations in Iligan City.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

The researchers used both primary and secondary data in collecting information

about the study. The primary data was obtained from the questionnaires that were

distributed to the respondents and the questions that were asked by the interviewers to

the interviewees.

22
The researchers personally distributed the questionnaires with a letter attached to

each questionnaire explaining the purpose of the study. Questionnaires were collected

after the respondents have successfully answered it.

The researchers had also personally asked for permission for an interview. The

answers to the questions of the interviewers were recorded in a voice recorder and

were transcribed into text.

STATISTICAL TOOLS

The responses was organized and was qualified using the simple frequency,

percentage system, the weighted mean, and the ranking methods with corresponding

analysis and interpretation.

1. Frequency and Percentages. This was used to determine the portion of a

specific response to the total responses.

Statistical qualification of the data using percentage system had been done by

using the formula given by Calderon (1993):

P or % = f/n x 100

Where,

P or % = percentage

f= Frequency

n= number of respondents

2. Weighted Mean. This was used to determine the rank of reasons for the choices

made by the respondents. To get the weighted mean, divide the summation of the

frequency with the total number of respondents.

23
Thus, the formula is:

X= ∑(f*i)/n

Where,

X= weighted mean

f= frequency

i= score points

n= number of respondents

∑ = summation

The range and verbal interpretation are the following:

Score Points Weighted Means Verbal Interpretation

5 4.00-4.75 Strongly Agree

4 3.26-4.00 Agree

3 2.51-3.25 Undecided

2 1.76-2.50 Disagree

1 1.00-1.75 Strongly Disagree
