Pawel Kuczynski Illustrations Ib Lang 11

This document contains analyses of four illustrations by Pawel Kuczynski depicting relationships between technology and knowledge/reality. The analyses discuss how the illustrations portray books as containing more extensive and reliable information than electronic devices, technology as enabling escape from reality, and the internet being treated like a vital resource or deity within families.

Pawel Kuczynski Illustrations

To start off, this image literally shows a

phone and tablet. Both are bodies of water

and the man chooses to be in the water.

Note that the book is a much larger body

of water, one where you can’t see the end

of the book while for the phone, it can’t

even fit the man himself. I feel the amount

of water refers to knowledge and

information. More specifically, reliable

information. This is the reason why the

book is a much larger body of water

compared to the phone. Although phones

can hold much more information and share

information much easier, it doesn’t mean that the information is reliable. A lot of the information

on the internet is basically chosen out to match your personality and gives what you want to see

rather than what they need to see and people, represented by the man, would prefer the phone

instead. However, with books, there are so many out there that have different points of views and
a variety of texts to read and learn from. People don’t see what they want to see but they can also

see the other side and even learn the truth behind something. I think overall, P. Kuczynski has

the belief and idea that books are just superior over electronic devices. That these devices will

eventually be the downfall of the human race. This can be seen with many other pictures that

Kuczynski has made.

In this image, it literally shows a man climbing

the internet “signal” to climb over a wall. Note

that the signal is coming from a phone or tablet.

I think that the wall represents the boundaries of

reality and beyond that wall are things we want.

And because the man is using the device’s

signal to climb over the wall, it seems that he is

trying to escape reality. Thus we humans use

our devices to escape reality. Technology has

changed and developed over the past centuries

drastically. There were some revolutionary

findings and advancements achieved but

doesn’t always mean a good thing. In this

image, it is telling the viewers and observers we now use technology to escape the reality we are

in. That doesn't really seem that bad but then you start to think about it, it can seem bad. My

thought one this is that since we’re trying to escape reality, we are trying to ignore our problems
and if we ignore our problems, then it won’t go away and possibly even get worse. That could

explain the more monotone and “sad” colors that were used. So overall, I believe that the general

message for this illustration is how we humans use technology as a way to escape reality.

This illustration shows a scuba

diver swimming underwater

where the floor of the sea bed is

a bunch of phones but on top,

there is a book with a pearl

inside. Pearls are seen as a very

precious item in society being

extremely precious. I feel that

the message of this illustration is

that knowledge from a book is

more precious than any form of

knowledge. The knowledge you

gain from technology is like getting minerals from the sea bed; it isn’t that precious and honesty

is pretty common. However, knowledge from books are rare and if can be found, is very valuable

to oneself. So I think that the overall message is saying that books are the superior form of

knowledge rather than from phones and that it is better to remember it too.
This image shows a family at

the dinner table with an

electronic device in front of

them with a wifi router in the

middle. Another thing to note is

that they are praying like the

router is the main course of the

meal. I feel what is being said is

that we treat the internet like it

was a meal that was important

to a whole family. They are

thankful for this thinking that the technology they have in front of them is vital for their survival

like its food. Also note that the husband of the family has the biggest tablet while the wife has

the smallest so it seems that the male is the superior and is the more important part of the family

why the wife is the least important. Also note the color pallet used for the image and how it's

used. The outside of the picture is black and starts to fade to white the closer it gets to the router

making it seem like it’s all and mighty like God.
