ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

Model qualifies as “difficult” because of its specific construction and large quantity of
small details; it requires a lot of exactitude, patience, and experience. To give less
experienced modelers a chance to complete this model, it was designed in a way allowing
different levels of complexity.
For beginners and less experienced modelers I propose assembling the model without
the interior, wheel wells, gun compartment, radar, cabin entrances, and fully detailed engine.
Most experienced modelers could try to build the model with folding undercarriage, but it
requires additional design (on your own) of a method to lock the undercarriage in open/close
position.
During assembly you should follow the rule “try it three times before gluing”.

CENTRAL FUSELAGE
Start by assembling internal structure of the central fuselage, using assembly drawing.
During this stage install movable base of the turret, which consists of elements W5, W7, W10,
and 25b. Elements W12 and W8 must be perpendicular to each other. Next step is to
assemble forward cabin, parts 88, 88a, 88bP, 88bL; rear cabin, parts 122, 122b,c, d, 123;
wheel well, parts 140, 140aP, 140aL and, eventually – gun compartment, part 130.
Next step is to glue in place skin segments, starting with parts 3, 3aP, and 3aL. Then
glue parts 4 and 5, pay close attention so the arrows on top and bottom elements are aligned.
Continue with skin segments towards front and back of the fuselage.
Space between formers W15 and W16 should be filled with ballast so the plane will be
standing on three wheels. Use whatever is convenient or readily available.
If you are constructing radar mock-up assembly, do not glue in place aircraft nose, part
1, but build it in such a way so it will sliding and resting securely on collar 1a on former w15.
Entrance to the forward cabin should be assembled from parts 106a, b, c, d, e, f, and g.
Glue the entrance ladder, part 119 to the entrance.
If you are building model with closed doors, ladder should be folded as shown on the
assembly drawing.
Next step is to assemble the cabin interior, interior walls, parts 96P, 96L; pilot’s seat,
parts 116a, b, 117P, 117L; gunner’s seat, parts 120a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h; instrument panel, parts
103,104, 109, 110, 112; Volant, parts 18, 108a, 108b; radar mock-up, parts 78, 79, 80, 81, 82,
83, 84, etc. Assemble and install bottles, parts 115 and 127 and fire extinguisher, part 114. In
the rear cabin install parts 123 i 124, entrance steps, part 128 and former 129. After the
interior assembly is completed, install the canopy on front cabin, parts 9, 9a, 10, 10a, armored
glass F9, and rear cabin canopy, parts 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.
NOTE!!! Before gluing framing to the canopy, paint their sides with color similar to the
interior of the cabin. Canopies could be made from the parts supplied or you can use
aftermarket canopies available from GOMIX.

Gun compartment
Part 130 glue inside of the frame of central fuselage after removing lower part of
former W2 and marked part of former W11. Parts 130aP. 130aL, 130bP, and 130bL glue on
the inside, lower part of segment 5. Glue part 130c inside of segment 6. Install parts 131,
133, and 134 which are the base for the guns. Use drawing to manufacture guns, part 136.
Finished guns should be glued in the base, so the barrels will be in tunnels 137a and 137b.
Glue in place ammo rails, parts 132, 138, and 139. Covers of gun compartment could be done
as permanently open or movable.

Center Wing
Inside segments of the wing should be assembled according to the construction
drawing. Close attention should be paid to make sure that bayonets of parts W1 and W2
protruding from the central fuselage should move freely inside of the pockets in the wing
support. In the lower part of the center wing frame, in between the supports, I advise on
gluing additional pieces of card to strengthen the frame in places where undercarriage will be
installed. After the skin is formed, but before glued in place, cut out openings for the air
intakes for the radiators. If you are building a model with movable wheel well covers, install
part 16b. Assemble air intakes and install them in the wing. In the air intakes glue partitions
47d, 47e, 48d, 48e installing them according to lines on parts 47c and 48c. After the glue is
set, cut out the unprinted parts of elements 47 and 48.
After performing holes in parts W41a and W41b for the axles for folding the main
undercarriage, glue them, and a former W4b to the wing.
Glue the inside parts of the wing to the fuselage (do not apply glue to the bayonets,
only to the areas of formers and the fuselage). Glue in place parts 46g and 46d, fuselage/wing
fairings.

Main undercarriage
Roll tightly part 64 on element X3, but do not glue them together. After the glue sets,
drill a hole for the part 65 in the resulting tube. Cut out protruding part of element 64 and
glue in element X3. Assemble and install remaining elements of main undercarriage
according to assembly drawing. Completed assembly should be installed in the marked spot
using elements X4.
Wheels should be completed from parts 62 and 62a, laminated with card to the
required thickness. Sand the wheels to the desired shape and paint them black. Glue in place
remaining elements 62b, 62c, and 62d. Do not install completed wheels until the tail booms
are ready.
NOTE!!! If you are building simplified version, without wheel wells, undercarriage
should be installed by puncturing holes in the fuselage, after the entire model is completed.

Front wheel
Roll tightly part 72 on element X5 and glue parts 73 and 74. Then glue in place parts
75a, b, c, and d, and 76. Install completed assembly in the well of the fuselage.

Tail booms
Complete engine assembly according to the drawing and glue them to the center wing.
If you are building simplified version substitute engine assembly with the former 61. Use
template to make propeller shaft and install it in the engine in a way as to allow it to rotate
freely. Install elements 19, which are part of the tail boom assemblies, and wheel wells for
main wheels. Install elements 19b between the edge of the wing and former W40.

Wheel covers
For model with closed well covers, build only fairings (part 37) of the main wheels.
Completed fairings should be glued to the fuselage in the marked spot. While building a
model with open covers, cut out marked areas under the wheel fairing. Cut and unfold covers,
glue parts 39g, 39f and 40, which are the insides of covers. Complete the fairing 37 with parts
39a,b, c, d, and e – insides. Inside elements are extending a little over the fairing; use this
area to glue to the covers.

-2-
In reality, when the plane was parked on the ground, only small wheel covers were
open. Remaining elements were being open only for extending or retracting of undercarriage
and for maintenance work inside of the wells. It is then advisable to complete the wheel
covers as movable elements.

Vertical control surfaces

Next step is to assemble the vertical control surfaces. Assemble the frame from parts
W41, 43,44,45,46,47 and skin parts 21,22,23,23a. Pay close attention to the fit of elements.
Cut out openings for the supports of horizontal control surface. Glue the completed assembly
to the tail booms; pay close attention to position them vertically.
Complete and install part 20. Glue part 19a on the upper surface of the center wing.
Glue wing/tail boom fairings, part 49w and 49z.

Horizontal control surface

Assemble the frame from parts W32, 33,34 and skin parts 24, 24a. Slide completed
assembly, by delicately moving the tail booms, between the vertical fins and insert the
protruding ends of supports into the prepared holes.

Outside wings
Complete the wing frame from parts W25, 26,27,28,35,36. Install the angular
supports W31 between the former and forward support. After the skin is formed, but before
glued in place, cut out openings for the air intakes for the radiators. Glue in place air intakes
after the skin part 17 is glued in place. Install wing tips 17b and 17c. Using the bayonets
W35b and W36b install the wings to the center wing (do not put glue on the bayonets)

Propeller
Start by preparing (on your own) cores of propeller blades from thin paper using
template 33b. Roll it tightly on element X2. Use similar method to prepare tubes 33c, which
will be moving slightly on the prepared cores.
Propeller base should be prepared from parts W50 and W51 to which should be glued
tube 33e in a way as to allow it to move with light resistance on the propeller shaft 33d
extending from the engine assembly. Glue tubes 33c on the propeller’s base.
Use part 33 to build the propeller hub and glue it to the base, aligning opening in the
hub with the tubes in which propeller blades will be located.
Sand down the core of the blade to desired shape. Glue the laminated former 35 and
the tube 33a to the core of the blade. Pay close attention so the diameter of tube 33a is not
greater than the core, otherwise you will not be able to insert the blade into the part 33c.
Form and glue propeller blades and then glue in part 34. Slide the whole assembly on to the
core, so the former 35 is hidden inside of the blade. Place the finished blades in the hub with
the same pitch.
NOTE
Propellers are turning in the same direction, which is marked on the assembly drawing.

-3-
Turret
Use elements W37 and W38a, b, c, d, e to build turret’s frame. The base, part W37
cannot be thicker than 1mm, so laminate with card only one from its elements. Parts 51 and
51a form a cylinder in which gun barrels, parts 51b and 51c rolled on core X12, will be
located. Place completed assembly inside the frame of the turret so it can rotate on the axle
X11. Form a skin of the turret from parts 50a,b, c, d, e, f, and g. From parts 52, 52a, and W23
create base of the turret. Completed assembly should, with slight resistance, slide into the
revolving turret base 52b in the fuselage frame. Glue base and turret together. Glue entire
assembly into the revolving base after model is completed.

Auxiliary fuel tanks

Build auxiliary fuel tanks from parts 44a,b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j and formers W22a, b, c,
d, e, f, g as per assembly drawing. Completed fuel tanks install to the under wings pylons.
Slide end of part X21 into the hole in the wing.

Bombs
Use parts 45a,b, c, d, e, f, g and assembly drawing to build bombs which could be used
as an alternative to the auxiliary fuel tanks on the under wing pylons.

Last stage is to install radio masts, outside radar antennas and Pitot’s probe.
