l7 Assignment - Signature Assignment - Planning Tool

Samantha Yap is presenting her Signature Assignment innovation project. She identified lower high school completion rates and lack of parental involvement in the Native American community in Mesa, Arizona as problems to address. Her solution is to host monthly community events to provide family support, connections between community members, and donations for those in need. Her professional goal is to act as a bridge between communities. She asks viewers to volunteer at or donate to the monthly events to fund speakers, donations, and after school programs to engage families, students and the community.

TEL400: Innovation in Education Endeavors

Lesson 7: Signature Assignment Presentation

Planning Tool
Name: Samantha Yap

You may begin planning your script for your Innovation multimedia presentation as early
as you prefer. When considering the content of your script, be sure refer to the
Signature Assignment Rubric. What elements do you need to cover in your Innovation
video? What is the message you want to portray and how are you going to deliver that
message?

Use this Innovation multimedia presentation document to review the outline of your
presentation, draft a script, and include materials you will need and resources you will
be referencing.

MultiMedia Presentation Outline

Your video will be 3-5 minutes in length. Your outline will include the
following topics, which are also listed in the rubric and instructions.
A. The community.
Summarize what you uncovered about the community you are focused on for this project.
This should include pertinent data from your community scan, meaningful portions of the
interview(s), and a description of how you uncovered this information and built empathy
for your user group.

B. Define the problem.

Clearly define the problem in the community your innovation will address. The description
must be compelling and help the audience build empathy for your end user. What policy/
policies supports, exacerbates or impedes the work? What community perceptions
support or impede the work? How are you connected to this community challenge?

C. Possibilities
Describe your possible solutions (innovation) and the tests you completed. What other
innovations are out there to address the problem? How is your solution unique? Consider
the feedback you received from your end users, mentors, and your colleagues in this
course that shaped revision. How did their feedback impact your final innovation?

D. Professional Identity
Who are you in this problem and innovative solution? How has uncovering the problem
and creating an innovation become part of your professional identity? Share your
professional purpose statement. Why should we invest in the innovation you are
proposing?

E. The Proposal
What are you asking viewers to do? How can they contribute to and support your
innovation? What will they get in return? What will your end users get and how will they
be better off and how will the world be a different, better place when your innovation is
enacted? How will you be different when this innovative idea becomes reality?

Presentation Script
(use the outline/content guide above to draft a script)
A. The community.

Hello, My name is Samantha Yap and I will be going over my Signature Assignment.

The community I wanted to outreach too wasn’t a community that I was involved in but
was a community that was near to me. San Tan Valley doesn’t have many needs and I
rather my time and effort go towards a community less fortunate. Many Native American
Reservations in Arizona suffer from poverty and I wanted to take a moment to shine light
on them and help in any way possible. The closest community to me was in Mesa,
Arizona. I was able to look through government resources to see that statistically
families in the Native American communities weren’t as involved with their children and
their growth and the high school completion rate was relatively low. This is where I came
up with the idea of trying to bridge a gap between the two so that children in the
communities could have a voice.

B. Define the problem.

The problem I was able to assess was a need for family support within the community.
Many families weren’t as involved in their children’s academic work and foundational
support. Many Native American family in Arizona are poverty stricken and broken, and
there is a lower graduation rate amongst teens. Parental involvement is much lower than
in surrounding communities and to make up for this lack of direct parental involvement I
had hoped community events/drives could take place to help bridge this gap. The A.R.S.
15-244, Indian Education Act is a policy that supports this development of educational
progress in youth in Native American families.
C. Possibilities

In this course I was able to use my Ideation to work towards ideas of how I could
address this problem within the community. There were a few outreach ideas I had, such
as a hot line or after school program, but many fell through or were too complex. The
simplest solution was to host a community event monthly as a means to provide support
for families, children, and provide physical support in donations or so on for families in
need. A community event would address the needs of families who may be less
fortunate with the opportunity for the government, community, or other families to donate
to those less fortunate than them. This would also provide a safe space for families to
interact and take an interest in other families so that the kids could make friends, find
support in leaders, and find support within their communities. It’s an overall sense of
togetherness and love that drives this mission.

D. Professional Identity

The only role I hope to play is that of a bridge to work between connecting the
community, families, and students to one another. I want to provide an opportunity for
students to have access to other positive role models and leaders. I want to provide an
opportunity for families to have access to financial support or food. I want to provide an
opportunity for togetherness and working together within the community. This has mixed
into my professional identity as I hope to work with others in the future and provide
kindness and opportunity wherever I go. This innovation would take a large initial
investment to get started as I’d like guest speakers, drives, family contributions, and so
on available for families.

E. The Proposal

What can you do? You can volunteer to work or guide individuals at the
community event or donate to provide for families in need. This could be something
where there’s a monthly event that allows other communities to work together at a
donating event to raise money for the community event fund or a standard monthly
contribution from individuals with the proceeds going to funding the event. The funds will
go towards guest speakers, providing a drive/donations directly to families, and perhaps
even fund after school programs so that ultimately students are more involved and
listened to. Families are more engaged and part of the community. And the gaps are
bridged between community, families, and students.
