Every year at the end of April and the beginning of May, the city of
Valledupar, becomes the host of the most important event in Vallenato
folklore, The Vallenata Festival of Legend, which each year highlights and
exposes the greatest exponents of vallenata music.

This festival has evolved over the years and has forged itself as a defender
and disseminator of the folkloric and popular expressions that surround
Vallenato.

The city of Valledupar, located to the northeast of the Colombian Caribbean

Coast, is the capital of the department of Cesar. The City of the Holy Kings
of the Upar Valley, as it is also called, bases its economy on agriculture,
livestock and is also the intermediate point of the two most important coal
mining basins in the country.

This city considered the cradle of the vallenato, is bathed by the majestic
waters of the Guatapurí river that spring from the Sierra Nevada and serve
as inspiration for many artists of the Vallenata culture, who have helped this
city become a cultural, musical epicenter and Folkloric of Colombia.

The cultural influences of this area of the country, served as a stimulus for
managers and representatives of Caribbean folklore, create an event that
highlights the importance and significance of Vallenata music in Colombia
and in the world, The Festival of Vallenata legend.

The Vallenata music is the result of the evolution of the songs of the dairy
and juggler, which peasants sang in the areas that comprise the province of
Padilla, these areas covered the current southeast of the department of
Magdalena, the south of Bolívar, Cesar and south of the Guajira.

To the sound of the guacharaca, the drum and the accordion, the vallenato
emerged as a crossbreeding of three cultures. The European influence
represented in the accordion, the African one in the drum and the
indigenous one in the guacharaca formed a fusion of sounds that brought
about the first sounds that identified Vallenata music.

The Vallenata legend festival emerged in 1968, as a result of the

management of three personalities. The then governor of Cesar Alfonso
López Michelsen, the composer Rafael Escalona and the cultural manager,
Consuelo Araújo Noguera. These in their eagerness to highlight the
greatness of the Vallenata music, created an event that served as a
showcase and letter of introduction for those exponents of the vallenato. In
the first edition of the Vallenato festival, Alejandro Durán was crowned the
first professional King Vallenato. However, during the following years,
participation was expanded and new categories were also created, such as
the initial song contest, accordion contests in the Amateur, youth and
children's categories; and the piquería contest between singers. After a
short time, this event was gaining much importance at the national level,
especially when one of its founders, Alfonso López michelsen, came to the
presidency of Colombia. From here in 1987 the Vallenata Legend Festival
Foundation was created, which under the direction of Consuelo Araújo
Noguera, directed the festival to what we know today. In addition, the
activities revolve around a program divided into 5 days that includes the
aforementioned competitions, parades, folkloric shows, cockfights, and
innumerable concerts organized by other organizations.

The escond holiday is Independence of Cartagena, it is officially celebrated in the city on

November 11th, however, the citizens celebrate it all month with the well-known
"Cartagena's festivities" prevailing in this time the fun and joy of a city that freed itself
from the Spanish yoke, in this important date Cartagena faced the Spanish empire and
took the destiny of its people in its hands, creating with it the bases of the freedom and
the change of the nation. During this festivity people welcome a great sense of identity
with their city, this is why during the month people usually eat the typical foods of
Cartagena such as a dish of fried mojarra with coconut rice. On the other hand, the
festivities of Cartagena are celebrated with parades and "bands" in the neighborhoods,
the floats of the beauty queens on the sides and the typical parades with folkloric groups
take importance because they show the culture of a Cartagena that is unique.
