What you need to know?

How do we round numbers?

 To round off numbers to an indicated place value, follow these steps:
1. Locate the digit in the place you are rounding off to.
2. Look at the digit to the right of the place you are rounding off to.
a. If the digit is less than 5, round down. Retain the digit in the place value you are
rounding off to and change all the digits to its right to 0.
b. If the digit is 5 or greater, round up. Add 1 to the digit in the place value you are
rounding off to and change all the digits to its right to 0.

For example:
Rounded to the nearest thousand - 75 625 76 000
Rounded to the nearest ten thousand - 69 258 70 000

Study these examples:

What you need to know?

How do we arrange numbers in increasing or decreasing order?

To arrange numbers in increasing or decreasing order, first pick any two numbers

and compare them starting from left to right. Find out which one is greater or less, then
put them in correct order. Then, pick another number and compare it with the one of the
first two numbers you picked. Then, put them in order accordingly. Do the same with the
other numbers.
 Numbers may be arranged in increasing order (least to greatest) or decreasing order
(greatest to least).
Examples:
Increasing Order
3 648 3 864 3 886 3 932

Decreasing Order
3 932 3 886 3 864 3 648

Another example:
Arrange the numbers in each table from least to greatest, and vice versa.

Least to Greatest Numbers Greatest to Least

24 813 625 391 628 931

What you need to know?

There are 323 bananas in a basket.

How many bananas are there in 32 baskets?

What is asked for in the problem?

What operation are you going to use?
How will you solve the given problem?

To solve the problem, you need to multiply 323 by 32.

The number sentence is 32 x 323 = n
Study the solution below using the place value chart.
To multiply numbers up to three digits by numbers up to two digits without regrouping, follow
these steps:
Step 1: Multiply 3 hundreds, 2 tens, and 3 ones by 2 ones.
Step 2: Multiply 3 hundreds, 2 tens and 3 ones by 3 tens.
Step 3: Add the partial products.

Study the short method:

323
x 32
646 multiply 323 x 2
+969 multiply 323 x 3 Add the partial products
10 336 Final product Leave the ones place blank

There are 945 members from Barangay Masikap. If each member contributed 35 packs of
noodles for the victims of typhoon Glenda, how many packs of noodles were collected?

How do we solve the problem? To solve the problem, you need to multiply 945 by 35. The
number sentence is 35 x 945 = N

What you need to know?

If one kaing holds 272 atises, about how many atises are there in 21 kaing? How will you solve
for the answer to the given problem?
The phrase “about how many” does not ask for an actual answer but an estimate. You will
estimate the product to solve for the answer.
Study the solution below.
Round each of the factors to its highest place value; then multiply the rounded numbers.
272 300
x 21 x 20
6000
Answer: There are about 6000 atises in 21 kaing.
You can find the actual product to check if the estimated product is reasonable.

272
x 21
272 272 x 1
+ 5440 272 x 20
5712 actual product
Notice that the estimated product is close to the actual product.
