1. Clamp ammeters are used to measure high levels of current without damaging the meter. They can accurately measure currents from 0 to 100 amps and some can measure up to 600 amps. 2. Ship electrical systems require an effective grounding system for safety. The standard equipment ground is an important part of ensuring safety on ships. 3. As a marine engineer, standard operating procedures for inspecting and monitoring electrical equipment on a cruise ship include routine operation and inspection of electrical instruments, starter panels, insulation resistance tests, earth fault finding, motor overhauling, and battery charging.

1. When do we use clamp ammeter?
• For measuring high levels of current, clamp meters are preferred. Without causing damage
to the meter, DMMs will not test 10 A of current for more than 30 seconds. A minimum
current range of 0 A to 100 A is given by the clamp meters. Most versions have a spectrum
of up to 600 A.

2. Illustrate the standard equipment ground and discuss its importance in electrical system of
shipping vessel?

• A ship is like a floating city with all the rights enjoyed by any regular city on land. The ship
also needs all the fundamental amenities to maintain life on board, just like a traditional
city; power or electricity is the chief among them. We will learn about how power is
produced and supplied on board a ship in this article.

3. As marine engineer, what are the standard operating procedures during the routine
inspection and monitoring of electrical equipment inside the cruise ship?
• As part of their on-board duties, electrical-related problems are required to be dealt with.
While there are many electrical jobs to be done on board ships, there are a few significant
ones that need special attention such as operation of various electrical instruments, starter
panel routine, insulation resistance, Earth fault finding, motor overhauling, bus bar
overhauling, battery charging on board, adjusting the load sensor of mooring winch, shore
Connection or AMP, and engine automation
4. In order to operate a 110-volt appliance a portable transformer at appropriate capacity is
necessary.
4.1. Illustrate a typical step-down transformer and discuss its major parts.
Major Parts:
• Primary winding - is connected to the input voltage supply and converts or transforms the
electrical power into a magnetic field.
• Secondary winding - is to convert this alternating magnetic field into electrical power
producing the required output voltage as shown.
• A.C. supply - creates a changing magnetic field to induce a changing voltage in a coil.
• Magnetic Iron Core - is a piece of magnetic material with a high magnetic permeability used
to confine and guide magnetic fields in electrical, electromechanical and magnetic devices.
• Flux – a transformer action requires an alternating or time varying magnetic flux in order to
transfer power from primary side to secondary side.

4.2. Show by means of electrical diagram the standard connection of transformer operation
with AC source and 110-volt light bulb.

5. A bridge circuit was applied in a shipping cargo vessel for further testing of liquid pressure.
Show the standard circuit diagram of a bridge circuit indicate the following resistances.
R1 = 10 ohms, R2 = 5 ohm, R3 = 15 ohm. What would be the unknown fourth resistance?
(Show your answer on a separate sheet of paper. )
Reflection on the Attainment of Intended Learning Outcomes:
In this activity, the first ILO were met and achieved. The group was able to illustrate the different
electrical and electronic devices, components, analog and digital measuring instruments as well as their
functions and application. The remaining two ILO were not met due to the constraints we are facing right
now and the limited instruments that can be used in our homes. Through some readings and research, we
were able to understand the concept and the importance of this laboratory activity. This can be applied in
the future to help us comprehend the problems faster. By knowing the symbols, we don't need to do it
actually but we can draw the problem and solve it by just plotting those symbols to understand it better. We
hope to know more with the next laboratory experiments.
