Direction: Study your surroundings. Answer the following questions.

1. How can you describe your surroundings:
At home:

In the community:

2. What composes these surroundings?

We are all part of the Earth’s dynamic web of life. Our life, lifestyle, and econo-
my are totally dependent on the Sun and Earth. We are connected to Earth
through our own interactions with the non-living things like air, water and soil.
People, animals, plants, and landforms and water forms compose our surround-
ings. Animals and plants, the living things that are needed in food chains and
food webs, are the sources of food in our surroundings. Plants provide food and
oxygen to other living things in the surroundings. Landforms and water forms
complete our surroundings.
Our surroundings include the land part of Earth or lithosphere. Without litho-
sphere, the animals would not have a place in which to live and reproduce.
People would not have places on which to build their houses without land.
There would be no roads, schools, parks, and hospitals of there is no land.
Hills and mountains are unique and are favorite tourists destinations. As “zones
of refuge”, they offer ideal conditions for the three R’s- rest, relaxation, and
recreation.
The water part of Earth or the Hydrosphere is also part of your surroundings. Wa-
ter is a basic need of life. It is used by man, animals and plants. It is very abun-
dant on Earth’s surface.
Lakes, rivers, and streams help monitor what is going on in a watershed. A wa-
tershed is an area of land that catches precipitation which then drains or seeps
into a marsh, stream, river, lake, or groundwater. Watersheds re also favorite
drinking holes of some animals. People swim in lakes, rivers, and streams. Others
go fishing.
Another important part of your surroundings or environment is the blanket of air
that surrounds you. It is the atmosphere. People, plants and animals need
clean air in order to live.
Your immediate surroundings include your home where your family lives. Your
school, neighborhood, and community are also part of your surroundings. All
the people that interact with you form part of your surroundings.
