Lesson Plan-Smart Goal Action Plan

This lesson plan aims to teach freshman males of color how to set academic goals and develop action plans to achieve them. In the lesson, counselors will introduce themselves, explain the learning objectives of identifying goals and creating action plans, and give examples of long and short-term goals. Students will then complete a worksheet to develop their own SMART goal and action plan focusing on an academic goal. They will share their goals and plans with each other and discuss potential obstacles and strategies to overcome them. The counselors will check in with students later to monitor their progress toward achieving the goals they set during this lesson.

overcome barriers as they are attempting to achieve their goals.

Procedure: Describe how you will:
Introduce: (5 min)​ Counselors will introduce themselves and do a wellness check by
asking students to respond to the poll question. “​Describe your mood
today​”

Communicate Counselors will explain, by the end of the lesson you will set a realistic
Lesson Objective: academic goal and create an action plan to help you achieve your goal.

● Understand why you’re setting these goals now and how realistic
they are
● How to measure your progress

Teach Content: (15 minutes)​ Counselor will explain what a goal is (long-term and
short-term) and give examples.
● Explain how long-term goals are composed of small steps and
what is needed to achieve such goal. “A goal without a plan is just
a wish.”
For example, if a student states, “I just want to pass science class” as part
of their quarter/end of year goal. You need to ask yourself more
intentional questions such what is needed to pass my science class? It’s
like a puzzle, you will need more than one piece to see the full picture.
Your goal is composed of many pieces that directly affect your grade.
(Class attendance, participation, turning in assignments on time, asking
clarifying questions etc.

Practice Content: SMART GOAL Action Plan Worksheet (20 minutes)


● Students will complete the SMART GOAL Action Plan worksheet
● They will choose a goal to focus on (academic goal)
● Have students share their quarter/end of the year goals and
action plans
● Have a ​discussion on possible obstacles and share how they
might overcome those obstacles-if any.

Summarize: As a collective, decide when students will revisit their goals to check on
their progress-accountability.

Close: Encourage students to finish the SMART Goal Action Plan and restate the
importance of the learning objectives.
