Epi & Ppi

The document describes an experiment to determine the thread density of woven fabric samples by counting the number of warp and weft threads per inch using a pick counting glass. The procedure involves placing a fabric sample on an illuminated glass plate and counting the warp threads perpendicular to the weft and vice versa to obtain the ends per inch (EPI) and picks per inch (PPI) values and calculating their average.

Experiment – Determination of Thread Density in Fabrics

Aim: Determine the EPI and PPI of given fabric samples.

Material & equipments required: pick counting glass, woven fabric.

Theory: In the woven fabric the warp yarns and commonly referred to
as ‘ends’ and number of warp threads per inch width of cloth stated as
ends per inch (EPI). The threads of weft are called ‘picks’ and number of
weft threads per inch width of cloth stated as ends per inch (PPI).

Procedure: A fabric sample laid on glass plate surface illuminated from

below. Then counting glass kept perpendicular to weft threads to count
warp threads per inch (i.e. EPI). Similarly counting glass kept
perpendicular to warp threads to count weft threads per inch (i.e. PPI).

Observations:

Results:

Warp Density (EPI) of given fabric sample =

Weft Density (PPI) of given fabric sample =

Precautions:

1. The region near the selvedge should be avoided because the

spacing of the threads is often a little different than in the body of
the cloth.

2. The region having defects like missing/broken threads should be

neglected for counting of threads.
