Ship Board Engine department is referred as Functional Structure organization. As every rank
has individual expertise and responsibilities and have small reporting cycle. The functional
structure is the most common type of organizational structure that businesses use, grouping
employees by specialty, skill or related roles. It is based on levels of hierarchy that include
different departments, under the direction of designated leaders.

Advantages can be it is more effective to complete tasks and projects without waiting on
decisions from multiple managers. A flat structure is often more effective in completing tasks
and projects faster. Departments focus on one area of work. Employees understand their own
and others roles. Giving tasks to individuals with the right skills also saves money because works
gets performed more efficiently.

Disadvantages can be hindered decision making, when management is not available for
feedback during time-sensitive projects, it may hinder the team’s overall progress. The
functional organization may result in lack of interest and motivation over time.
