In particular,the
case study doesn’t mention actual product selections made by the networkdesigners. Making
these selections is your job. Read through the case study and answerthe following questions.
1. Based on the design requirements and decisions that have been made, what
wirelessaccess points would you recommend for WVCC? Do some Internet research to
findan access point that will meet WVCC’s needs and write two or three paragraphsabout
the product and why you chose it.
I would choose a Cisco Aironet 3600 Series Access Point. It delivers up to three times
more coverage for wireless devices. It provides the industry’s only 4x4 MIMO. A 4x4
MIMO system with dynamic digital beamforming and MIMO receiver processing
supports two maximum-rate data streams.
I chose the product because Cisco is arguably one of the world’s greatest leaders in
networking and services. It’s a modular device that can adapt to almost anything you
want it to be. The security of the device is unparalleled and would provide a great deal of
security.
I would choose the Elektron RADIUS server from Periodik Labs. It’s a windows GUI-
based server that is targeted toward wireless authentication for a small or midsized
networks. It does support other purposes as well.
Elektron supports the following authentication methods: PEAP, TTLS, EAP-FAST, EAP-
TLS, LEAP, PAP, CHAP, MS-CHAP, MS-CHAPv2, EAP-MS-CHAPv2, EAP-MD5,
EAP-GTC, and EAP-OTP.
Elektron is user-friendly and provides a solid foundation. The license runs you about
$750 which isn’t a whole lot in the grand aspect of things.
I would choose the IBM Security Network Intrusion Prevention System. The system is
designed to stop constantly evolving threats. It balances high levels of protection and
performance while lowering the over cost. The easy-to-use system is highly rated among
several review sites.
The IBM Security Network Intrusion Prevention System allows you to consolidate point
solutions as well as integrating other security tools. Advanced threat protection is
provided by the IBM X-Force research and development team.
4. WVCC’s IT department would like to deploy a solution for managing the
wirelessnetwork. The solution should allow the network administrators to remotely
managethe access points and discover any rogue access points that students or faculty
mightinstall without permission from the IT department. Either a hardware appliance or
asoftware application that runs on a shared server will meet the need. Do someInternet
research to find a wireless management product that will meet WVCC’sneeds, and write
two or three paragraphs about the product and why you chose it.
HiveOS includes features like Secure fast roaming (L2 and L3), Radio resource
management, Band steering and load balancing for high-density network deployments,
Stateful firewall with application layer gateways (ALGs), Web server for guest access –
Captive Web Portal, Flexible interaction with user databases: RADIUS server, RADIUS
Caching, native directory integration, and SIP2 databases for libraries, Full QoS,
Spectrum Analysis, WIPS, Rogue detection and mitigation.
5. The work of an IT department is never finished. The WVCC network administrators and
student assistants have many plans for the next network upgrade. Their main concern at
this point is availability. Although the hierarchical mesh network has some redundancy,
there are many single points of failure. Availability of applications can be adversely
affected by any one of these points failing. Write a short paper that identifies the most
significant single points of failure in WVCC’s new network design. Discuss the changes
to the network design that you would make (or additional products that you would
recommend) to avoid these single points of failure.
