(Regulation 2015)

Time: 3 Hours Answer ALL Questions Max. Marks 100

USE OF IRC- 5,6,78,83,112,IS - 456, 800, 2911 AND RAILWAY BRIDGE CODES MAY BE PERMITTED
ANY MISSING DATA MAY BE SUITABLY ASSUMED

PART-A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1. What are the preliminary data to be collected while investigating a major bridge?
2. Differentiate class AA loading and 70R loading of tracked vehicle.
3. Give the performance criteria for an effective joint sealing system of a long span bridge
4. How will you find reaction factor for girder using Courbon’s Theory?
5. Define short term and long term deflection
6. In prestressing work, if more than one wire or strand is included in the same duct, why
should all wires/strands be stressed at the same time?
7. What is a purpose of providing Lateral Bracings in plate girder bridges?
8. Draw a sketch showing a cross-section of semi-through plate girder span showing
components.
9. What is “preset” in bridge bearings?
10. Name the structural elements of an abutment.

Part – B ( 5 x 13 = 65 marks)

11. a) Design a deck slab bridge for the following data:

Clear distance between abutments: 6.5 m Road : NH (Two Lane)
Foot path : 1m on either side Width of bearing : 400 mm
Wearing coat : 80mm average Loading : IRC Class AA (Tracked)
Materials : M30 concrete and Fe 415 Steel
(OR)
b) Design a RCC Tee beam girder bridge for the following data:
Clear width of road way : 7.5 m Span (c/c of bearing) : 16 m
Live load : IRC class AA Tracked vehicle Ave. thickness of wearing coat : 80 mm
No. of main girders : 4 Spacing of cross girders : 4m
Materials : M30 concrete and Fe 415 Steel

12. a) (i) Explain the parts of box culvert with a sketch. What are the design
loads and load cases to be considered in the design of box culverts.
Also explain the features and design considerations in the design of
box culverts. (6 marks)
(ii) With a schematic diagram explain the design principles of balanced
cantilever bridge. (7 marks)

the profile of the CGS is parabolic, with no eccentricity at the ends. The live
load moment due to service loads at mid-span (MLL) is 650 kNm. The
prestress after transfer (P0) is 1600 kN. Assume 15% loss at service. Grade
of concrete is M35. Evaluate the following quantities. a) Kern levels b)
Cracking moment c) Location of pressure line at mid-span at transfer and
