 Introduction
Streaming files can be used to present three dimensional data in various Microsoft products,
such as Word, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer. Visualisations such as real-time rotation
and zooming are possible with the streaming file embedded into one of these products.

Requirements
Prior to proceeding with this tutorial, you will need:

Surpac Vision v5.2 or later installed

A dataset to be used for visualisation

Objectives
The objective of this tutorial is to allow you to create streaming files and embed them into
various other file formats.

 Creating a Streaming File
Overview

The following concepts will be presented in this chapter:

1. Displaying data in Surpac Vision

2. Exporting to a streaming file

Requirements

Prior to performing the exercises in this chapter, you will need:

• Surpac Vision v5.2-C or later installed

• A data set, such as Surpac DTMs, string files, etc.

1. Display the data set in graphics

A streaming file is created from all data currently visible in graphics in Surpac Vision v5.2.

This example will use a dataset installed with Surpac Vision v5.2. You may use any data.

Set the working directory. This must be set to <software install dir>/demo_data/surpac_demo
where <software install dir> may be, for example, “C:/SurpacMinex/Surpac_V5.2-C” for
version 5.2C. If you are using a different version than V5.2-C, substitute your version number
here.

Open the file project.swa (you can double click the icon next to the filename or drag and drop
the file from the navigator into Graphics). You should see several DTMs and string files:

 2. Export streaming file

There are two methods to invoke the function to generate a hoops streaming file.

From the File menu, select Save to Stream Control.

Fill in the form as shown below, then click Apply.

Two files will be created in the working directory:

design.hsf and design.html

Alternatively, from the toolbar, click the Internet Explorer icon to select Export current
graphics view to Surpac active X interchange format (hsf). Then fill in the form as shown
above to generate the two files.

Summary

What you have learned so far is how to create a Hoops Streaming File (.hsf), as well as an
HTML file with the image embedded within it.

Overview

The following concepts will be presented in this chapter:

1. Opening an HTML file containing a streaming file

2. Installing the driver
3. Viewing the data in the streaming file

Requirements

Prior to performing the exercises in this chapter, you should have:

• a *.hsf file created previously

• a *.html file which refers to the *.hsf file
• Internet Explorer v6.0 or above

1. Viewing the HTML file

Double click on the filename to open the file design.html in Internet Explorer

2. Installing the driver

If you have not previously viewed any hsf files on your computer, you will be prompted to
install the driver from the form below. Click Install.

Note: Depending on the speed of your modem, it may take a while to download and install the
driver software.

The file is approximately 2.2 Megabytes so on a 56Kbits/sec modem it will take approximately
2 200 000 bytes / 5600 bytes/second = 392 seconds = 6.5 minutes

 3. Viewing data

Once the driver installation is completed, the data will display in the HTML file.

Using the left mouse, click and drag in the viewport to spin the data in three dimensions.

Right click anywhere on the image, and a popup menu will be displayed:

Select an option, such as Zoom, then left click and drag in the viewport to zoom the data.
Some options, such as the Shadow are a toggle function. The Window Colour option will
allow you to set different colours for the upper and lower halves of the viewport.

Requirements

Prior to performing the exercises in this chapter, you should have:

• a *.hsf file created by Surpac Vision v5.2

• Installed the streaming file driver
• Microsoft Word installed

1. Embedding a streaming file in Word

Open a new or existing Word document.

Position the cursor where you want the file embedded.

From the Insert menu, select Object.

On the Create New tab, select Surpac Minex Stream Control Class, then click OK.

A window will appear within the word document.

Right click inside the window and select Properties.

 On the Properties table, enter the following:

Embed: enter the value 1 (the value 1 embeds the image)

File name: the full path of the file needs to be inserted, for example:

c:\surpacminex\surpac_v5.2-d\demo_data\surpac_demo\design.hsf

On the Control Toolbox, select the “Exit Design Mode” icon:

You should see the image embedded in Word:

Requirements

• a *.hsf file created by Surpac Vision v5.2

• installed the streaming file driver
• Microsoft PowerPoint installed

1. Embedding a streaming file in PowerPoint

Open a new or existing PowerPoint document.

Position the cursor where you want the file embedded.

From the Insert menu, select Object.

On the Create New tab, select Surpac Minex Stream Control Class, then click OK.

A window will appear within the word document.

Right click inside the window and select Properties.

From the View menu, select Slideshow, and you should see the image displayed:

Right click anywhere on the image, and a popup menu will be displayed:

Select an option, such as Zoom, then left click and drag in the viewport to zoom the data.

Some options, such as the Shadow are a toggle function. The Window Colour option will
allow you to set different colours for the upper and lower halves of the viewport.
