Let's Check: Activity 1

1. The document provides an activity to test understanding of basic terms in dynamics and rigid body motion such as particle, kinetics, trajectory, kinematics, rigid body, force, mass, time, displacement, and dynamics. 2. It then asks what is the importance of Newton's Laws of Motion in dynamics. Newton's Laws are the foundation of dynamics, which deals with motion under forces. The three laws are inertia, force and acceleration, and action and reaction. 3. Examples are given to illustrate each law, such as an object at rest staying at rest without a force (inertia), greater acceleration for less mass with same force (force and acceleration), and equal but opposite forces during interactions like dropping

MELROSE LOPEZ BSECE – IV ACTIVITY #1

MECH 223 – DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

Let’s Check

Activity 1:
Now that you know the basic terms and concepts in the study of
engineering mechanics, let’s try to check your understanding of these
terms. Write the term/s on the space provided for the statement in each
item.

PARTICLE 1. It is a body of negligible dimensions.

KINETICS 2. Observes motion by considering the forces that cause the
motion.
TRAJECTORY 3. is a line or a curve obtained when all the points
a body occupies within a specific time period are joined.
KINEMATICS 4. Observes motion without considering the
forces that cause the motion.
RIGID BODY 5. is a body whose changes in shape are
negligible compared with the overall dimensions of the body or with the
changes in position of the body as a whole.
FORCE 6. is the action of one body on another.
MASS 7. is the quantitative measure of the inertia or
resistance to change in motion of a body.
TIME 8. is a measure of the succession of events and
is considered an absolute quantity in Newtonian mechanics.
DISPLACEMENT 9. Time rate of change of position coordinates.
DYNAMICS 10. is that branch of mechanics which deals
with the motion of bodies under the action of forces.

Activity 2:
What is the importance of Newton’s Law of motion in Dynamics?
Give examples to elaborate your answer.

Newton’s law of motion plays an important role in dynamics. It is considered as the

foundation of dynamics. Dynamics is a branch of mechanics that deals with the motion of bodies
under the action of forces. There are three laws under Newton’s law of motion. These are the law
of inertia, the law of force and acceleration and the law of action and reaction. In law of inertia,
an object will not move without a force acting on it. For example, a phone is placed on your desk,
it stays at rest. It will not move unless a force is applied to it. It may be a push or a pull. In law of
force and acceleration, it states that the acceleration is directly proportional to the force. The
acceleration has two factors: first, the acceleration depends on net force directly. Second, the
acceleration is inversely proportional with the mass of the object. For example, two objects, say
a volley ball and a bowling ball, they have different mass. You will kick it forward with the same
force acting on the two balls, surely, the lighter weight will have more acceleration, and the
heavier weight has the less acceleration. In action and reaction law, its principle states that, for
every action of an object, there is an equal and opposite reaction. For example, you drop a ball
on a table. In this interaction, there are two resulting forces. These are the force on the table and
the force on the object. The magnitude of its force applied are the same but in the opposite
direction. The force exerted by the ball is called the action force while the force exerted by the

table is called the reaction force. Hence, newton’s law of motion is important in dynamics and in
every day life.
