Distributed scenarios are based on three tiers, with at least one dedicated server per each
tier, concerning the following services:
• Applications
• Data
• Web
In the Applications tier, there is at least one server where the SIMATIC IT Components are
installed. This server executes the production logic of the SIMATIC IT application.
Production Modeler operates as the main engine, coordinating all the other components.
The logic is developed as a set of PM rules, and interaction between PM and components
is provided by GSI interface.
The Data tier consists of a dedicated SQL Server database. The server handles all
operations involving SIMATIC IT data, both production and historical, such as storing data
and performing queries and other operations (e.g. updating, deleting) upon the request of
SIMATIC IT servers or clients.
Primary function of the Web tier, is to act as the SIMATIC IT network web server, executing
CAB applications and delivering web content when requested by client machines via a web
browser.

If you plan to connect to SIMATIC IT via Remote Desktop Protocol (see section Remote
Desktop Services Support for software prerequisites), the Remote Desktop Services Server
must satisfy specific hardware requirements, which may vary significantly depending on the
number of connected RDP Clients.
For a scenario with a maximum of 50 connected RDP Clients, the RDS Server must satisfy
the following hardware requirements:
• CPU: 4C/8T (x2)
• RAM: 16 GB
Introduction
Historian projects may require specific hardware for the computer where SQL Server is
installed, due to the high amount of data transferred and stored in Historian databases.
The following hardware configuration is recommended for a SQL Server computer used for
a Historian project processing up to 4000 tags per second:
• CPU: 1 processor (6 cores)
• RAM: 16GB
• Hard Disks:
– 2x 146GB, RAID 1 (operating system)
– 4x 300GB, RAID 5 + HS (data)
– Speed: 10,000 - 15,000 rpm
For Historian projects processing more than 4,000 tags per second, high throughput must
be guaranteed by the hardware used in the SQL Server computer, depending on the
number of tags processed per second.
More specifically:
Number of tags processed per second Recommended I/O operations per second
The more tags are processed per second, the faster an Historian database grows in size.
For example, when processing 1000 tags per second, the database size increases by about
290MB per hour.
Additionally, other factors must be taken into account to determine hardware requirements
for such large Historian projects, such as:
• The time span covered by each online database
• The duration of the period in which data must be kept online
These factors determine the maximum size of each database and the number of attached
database (online Historian databases are always attached).
SQL Server performance is affected when very large databases are used and when a lot of
databases are attached. For more information, see the relevant Microsoft documentation.
Important
It is recommended that you consult your IT department for a list of recommended
hardware requirements for SQL Server for large Historian projects.
The following sections list all the operating systems supported for computers used in
SIMATIC IT scenarios.

VMWare ESX is supported as of release 6.5 of SIMATIC IT. Please remember that MES is a
mission-critical application and factors like performances, repeatability of time response,
interaction with control layer and others must be considered. Because of this, the hardware
architecture chosen for MES should be adequate and reserved to MES.
Concurrent execution on the same hardware of other tasks, even if isolated by a
virtualization system, could affect MES in an unpredictable way. Virtual Machine sizing
described in this document requires CPU reservation on VMWare (generally speaking 1
vCPU is approximately 1 Core).
SIMATIC Logon, OPEN PCS7, TIA, cluster scenarios and any configuration not described
in this document are subject to approval by the Bidding Consulting Department
([email protected]).
Note The services offered by the Bidding Consulting Department are only available to
SIMATIC IT Partners.
The usage of Microsoft Remote Desktop Services with SIMATIC IT is supported only for
Historian Data Display (HDD), and only if the following prerequisites are satisfied.
Note In operating systems prior to Windows Server 2008 R2, Remote Desktop Services is
called Terminal Services.
Tip For more information on how to configure Remote Desktop Services support, see
SIMATIC IT Configuration Manual.
