Final Exam MKPP 2333 - 20202021 - Part A

This document is the final examination for an Enhanced Oil Recovery course taken online. It consists of 3 questions assessing the students' understanding of pore-scale displacement mechanisms, relative permeability curves, and surfactant-polymer flooding as an EOR method. Question 1 involves sketching pore doublets in oil-wet and water-wet systems and drawing relative permeability curves. Question 2 calculates mobility ratio and capillary number from reservoir properties and argues for the need for EOR. Question 3 explains how surfactant-polymer flooding improves oil recovery over waterflooding with sample calculations. The exam is worth a total of 60 marks and instructs students to answer all questions in an open book format.

FINAL EXAMINATION SEMESTER I

SESSION 2020/2021

COURSE CODE : MKPP 2333

COURSE : ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY

PROGRAMME : MKPP

MODE OF EXAM : NORMAL (ONLINE)

TIME : 3 HOURS

DATE : 10 FEBRUARY 2021

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENT:

1. ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS (PART A AND PART B)

2. AN OPEN BOOK EXAMINATION

CHEATING IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED DURING EXAMINATION

THIS EXAMINATION PAPER CONSISTS OF 4 PRINTED PAGES INCLUSIVE OF THIS PAGE

PART A
QUESTION 1 (20 Marks)
CLO CLO1
Marks (a) i (a) ii (b)
5 5 10

(a) Sketch a pore doublet model showing water displacing oil/gas in:
(i) Oil – Wet system (5 Marks)
(ii) Water – wet system (5 Marks)

Label all relevant points

(b) Relative permeability curves are affected by wettability, pore geometry, fluid distribution,
saturation and saturation history. Wettability affects relative permeability by controlling the flow
and the distribution of fluids. Clearly sketch the relative permeability curves for water-oil system
showing the effects of wettability. Label all key points of these curves. (10 Marks)

QUESTION 2 (20 Marks)

CLO CLO2
Marks (a) (b) (c)

“We need to do EOR because of some limitations in waterflooding process”. Waterflooding has
been conducted in a reservoir with 28°API oil and IFT 18 dynes/cm. The reservoir temperature is
160°F. Assume viscosity versus temperature correlation shown in Figure 1 can be used to estimate
the viscosity of water and oil in the reservoir. You may also assume the necessary
conditions/values/data to calculate the mobility ratio and capillary number. The values must be
reasonable and applicable to a typical sandstone reservoir and an ordinary waterflooding process.

2
Figure 1 Relationship between kinematic viscosity and temperature

(a) Calculate the mobility ratio (8 Marks)

(b) Calculate the capillary number for a normal waterflooding (8 Marks)
(c) Based on your calculation, write down your argument on the importance of implementing
EOR method/s for this reservoir. (4 Marks)

QUESTION 3 (20 Marks)

CLO CLO3
Marks 20

Using your own examples and assumptions, explain how Surfactant-Polymer (SP) flooding could
improve the normal waterflooding and thus oil recover. Show some example calculations that you
think necessary to support your argument/conclusion.
