A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN - I. Objectives

This detailed lesson plan teaches students about measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) using ungrouped data. The objectives are for students to be able to describe and apply the concepts, and solve related problems accurately. The lesson motivation uses a story about siblings named Mean, Median, and Mode to represent the concepts. Students will learn definitions and examples of finding the mean, median, and mode of data sets. An activity called "MMM Fingers" will have student groups compete to correctly solve problems within time limits and cross a game board mat. The goal is for students to understand and value that each person's abilities are unique.

A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ___________________

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. describe the measures of central tendency of ungrouped data (mean, median, mode);
B. apply the concept of measures of central tendency in real-life situation; and
C. solve problems involving mean, median and mode accurately.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Measures of Central Tendency of Ungrouped Data
B. Reference: Mathematics Learner’s 7, Elizabeth R. Aseron, et.al., pages 249-251
C. Materials: slate boards, markers, MMM Finger Mat, PowerPoint presentation, activity worksheets
III. Lesson Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. P-A-S-S

A-Arrange your chairs
S-Show your sweetest smile to your
seatmates
S-Say “good morning” to everyone
B. Motivation

I am going to read to you a short story

titled “The Averages”.

“The Averages”
Once upon a time, there was a single
Mom named Ms. Central Tendency. She has
three (3) children. They were Mean (first
child), Median (middle child) and Mode (last
child). Mean, Median and Mode do not have a
good relationship. They are always rivals in
catching their Mom’s attention. Mean is
always dependent on whatever the decision of
Median ad Mode. She will always be the
average. It is her way to be at the center.
Median is the middle child. As a middle child,
she always wants to be at the middle between
the two. She doesn’t want to be bias. That’s
her way to be at the center. The last one is
Mode. He wants to be always present. He was
the most frequent among the three children.
He always wants that all the attention must be
on him. He has the nicknames; Unimodal,
Bimodal, and Multimodal. It is his way to be
at the center.
Those are the three children of Ms.
Central Tendency. They always tend to be at
the center. However, their Mom says, “I will
prove to the world, to the Universe, that you
are the center of my heart.”

C. Presentation
From the story, why do the three siblings
do not have a good relationship from each It is because they all want to be at the center of
other? their mother’s heart, Sir!
Very good!
Today, you will learn the concept of these
three siblings being at the center of their
mother’s heart.
These are the Measures of Central
Tendency of Ungrouped Data -the Mean,
Median and the Mode.

D. Lesson Proper
From the story, who can describe the
Mean? Mean is the average, Sir!

Brilliant!
Mean
In finding the mean of a statistical data,
1. Add up all the data;
2. Divide the sum by the number of data.

Example 1.
The following is the number of children of
5 families in barangay Dagueray.
5, 3, 3,6,3
Who can solve for the mean?
5+ 3+3+6+3
Mean=
5
20
¿
5
Excellent!
¿4
How about the median? Who can describe
the median?

Very good!
Median is the middle score.
Median
In finding the median,
1. Arrange the data in least to greatest or vice
versa
2. The middle number is the median. If there
are two middle numbers, add them and
divide it by two.

From the given data, arrange the

scores/values and find for the median.

Very good! 3, 3, 3, 5, 6
Now, I will add one datum in the given The median is 3.
data. Let’s say 5, 3, 3, 6, 3, 4. What is the
median?
3, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6
The two middle data are 3 and 4.
3+ 4
Median=
2
7
¿
Brilliant! 2
What is a mode based from the story? ¿ 3.5

Very good!

Mode is the most frequent number. Mode is the most frequent data.
Kinds of Mode
1. Unimodal – one mode
2. Bimodal – two modes
3. Multimodal – three or more modes

From the given data, what is the mode?

Very good. What kind of mode is the data?

Excellent! The mode is 3.

There are cases that there is no mode in a
given data.
It is unimodal, Sir.
Let us have another example.

Example 2.
The following are scores of 7 students in
Math quiz; 6, 3, 4, 5, 8, 5, 4. Find the mean,
median and mode. Then identify what kind of
mode does it belong.

3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 8
3+ 4+ 4 +5+5+7+ 8
Mean=

Example 3.
These are the 6 ages of Mr. & Mrs. Reyes’
Median=5
children; 20, 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8. Solve for Modes=4∧5, Bimodal
the mean, median and mode.

20, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8

(The teacher will check whether or not the 26
students understood the lesson through the Cootie ¿
Catcher.) 2

F. Valuing No mode
From our topic today class, what value
could you accumulate from our lesson for today?

That’s right class! Like of what from the

story, I have shared to you a while ago, each one
of us has a unique personality and ability. We
don’t need to compete from others to be at the
center of attraction. As it is written in Psalms
139:14, you are fearfully and wonderfully made
by God.
(The students’ answers may vary.)
G. Application
Today, we will have an activity. This
activity is called “MMM Fingers”.

“MMM Fingers”
Mechanics:
1. The class will be grouped into 5.
2. The activity is composed of three rounds-Easy
Round with 3 problems; Average Round with 2
problems, and Difficult Round with one problem.
3. Each group will be given slate boards.
Each round has corresponding time limit to
answer the following problems (15, 30, 60
seconds respectively).
4. When the time stops, the slates must be raised.
The group who failed to do so will be
automatically eliminated for that given problem.
5.The group who will get the correct answer has a
chance to cross the MMM Finger Mat. Like in the
mobile game “MMM Fingers”, the team must
avoid the enemies. The player will spin the wheel
to determine their steps on the mat. If it happens
that they stop on the part of enemy, it means that
they will return two steps backward. Each group
must have a representative to step on the mat.
6. The group with the farthest step will be
declared as winners and will receive a prize.

Rubrics
Score Description
20 The group who reached the farthest
step.
18 The group who reached the 2nd
farthest step.
16 The group who reached the 3rd
farthest step.
14 The group who reached the 4th
farthest step.
12 The group who reached the nearest
step.

IV. Evaluation
(See attached activity worksheet.)
V. Agreement
A. Follow-Up
Directions: Calculate the mean, median and mode for each data. Write your answers in a ½
sheet of paper.

Given Mean Median Mode

1. 18, 24, 17, 21, 24, 16, 29, 18

2. 75, 87, 49, 24, 50

3. 19, 13, 15, 25, 18, 15

B. Advanced
Read about Analyzing, Interpreting, and Drawing Conclusions from Graphics and Tabular
Presentations. Answer the activity on page 252.
