CXC Mathematics School Based Assessment (SBA) YEAR 2020

This document describes a study conducted to determine the optimal distance to shoot from on a netball court. Six participants each took shots from distances of 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m, and 3m and the number of goals scored was recorded. The data showed that shooting from 1.5m and 2m resulted in the highest percentage of goals scored at 78% and 72%, respectively. It was concluded that the optimal shooting distance on a netball court ranges from 1.5m to 2m.

PROJECT TITLE

An investigation to determine the optimal distance to shoot on a Netball Court

INTRODUCTION

Netball is a ball sport played by two (2) teams of seven players. The game is played on a

rectangular court. Each team attempts to score goals by throwing the ball from different

distances within a semi-circle on the court to place the ball through the goal ring. However, the

researcher’s reason for selecting the topic for the School Based Assessment (S.B.A) was to

determine the best distance to shoot on the netball court.

Of course, the information we get from this investigation, will not only answer our

queries, but it will also assist others to appreciate the skills and tactical plays that are applied to

each time a team plays.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

An experiment was done to collect the data for this research. Six participants went to a netball

court. A straight line was drawn from the base of the post to the middle of the court. From the

base of the post there were markers 1 meter a part. There was a total of five marked spots.

Participants shoot three shots each from1m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m and 3m and the information

received was recorded in the table below.

DATA ANALYSIS

Table 1 along with the column graph showed the number of goals scored by each participant

from various distances from the post. Person 1 had his/her best results at 1.5 meters and 2meters

from the post with 1.5 meters being his/her best being 3 scores out of 3 shots and 3 m was his/her

lowest, where he/she scored no goals. Person 2 had a perfect result at 1.5 meters and 2 meters

from the post and his/her worse was 1 meter he/she scored 0. For Person 3 at 1.5meters, 2meters

and 2.5 meters he/she scored 2 goals each from each position. On the other hand, Person 6 only

scored 2 goals overall one each from 1.5 meters and 2 meters away from the post; for the other

distances he/she scored no goals. Person 5 had his/her best chance at the 2 meter mark where 3

goals were scored, seconded by the 1.5 meter mark, where she scored 2 goals. Lastly Person 4

got his/her best results at the 1.5 meter mark scoring 3 out of 3 shots. Person 4 worst

performances were at 1 meter and 3 meter where he/she did not score any goals there.
DISCUSSION OF FINDING

Looking through the data collected it was very evident that distance away from the post does

affect the goals that are scored. The two weakest spots were 1 meter which was extremely close

to post and the 3 meter mark which was outside the shooting circle. The 1 meter mark and the 3

meter mark had 11% and 17 % goals scored respectively. The 1.5 meter mark was the best

scoring spot where 78% of the shoots took were scored. The 2 meter mark also seemed to be a

very good spot to shoot from, 72% of the shoots took were scored. At the 2.5 meter it was not the

best neither was it the worse.

.
CONCLUSION

It is very clear that there is an optimal distant to shoot on the netball court. Distances less than

1.5 meters and greater than 2 meters, were not the favorable spots to shoot from, they recorded a

very low percentage that ranged from 11 % to 33% at best. On the other hand, it can be

concluded that the optimal distance to shoot on the netball court ranged from 1.5mters to 2

meters. These ranges produced over 70% scoring changes.
