Loads Acting On The Structure: Deck Slab Load Cantilver Part

This document summarizes the various loads acting on a steel truss bridge structure during construction and use. It describes self weight of the steel truss members, green concrete loads applied during construction via props, and live loads. Wind loads are also calculated based on code specifications, including drag and lift forces on truss members and a vertical load. Design load values are provided for the main girder, cross girder, and deck slab segments.

4 Loads Acting on the Structure

4.1 Self Weight of Steel Truss

The self weight of steel truss is obtained from the respective member definitions in the
software and a material density of 78.5 kN/m3 .

4.2 Green Concrete Load and Live load during Construction

The green concrete load is transferred to the main truss via props resting on the structural
steel beam grillage comprising ISMBs. The green concrete load is hence applied on the main
truss in form of point loads wherever appicable. The magnitude of these point loads are
calculated as shown below.

main girder area = 1.56 sqm (incl slab portion)

main girder length = 2 m (effect on each node of truss)

main girder concrete point load = 81 kN

Main girder props = 10 kN
Adding 10 kN for live load = 10 kN
Total main girder load on each node = 102 kN
A conservative value of 131 kN is considered for design.

cross girder weight = 66 kN

props and extra = 3 kN
load considered = 69 kN
Adding 3 kN for live load = 72 kN

DECK SLAB LOAD

Cantilver part

total width = 2.10 m

contribution of central prop = 1.05 m
contribution of outer prop = 0.53 m

length of segment = 2 m
thickness of slab = 0.24 m

weight on centre beam = 14 kN

weight on outer beam = 7 kN

Inner part

The inner segments load of deck slab is divided into 3 types of segments based on the span
in transverse direction to calculate the loading on the form traveller system.

Segment no. 1 of 2 m width = 25 kN

Segment no. 2 of 1.785 m width = 23 kN
Segment no. 3 of 1 m width = 13 kN

4.3 Wind Load on Superstructure

Wind load on the truss is calculated based on IS 875 Part 3: 2015. For the bridge truss type structure
the IS 875 Part 3 code does not explicitly provide drag and lift coefficients to be used for analysis.
However, these values are clearly given in the bridge specific code , IRC 6 : 2017. Hence, basic wind
parameters are taken from the IS code, where as structure related terms are taken from IRC 6.

Wind pressure
basic wind speed = 44 m/s
k1 = 0.73 (for 44 m/s)
k2 = 1.15 (30m height, terrain cat-1)
k3 = 1
k4 = 1
vz = 36.94 m/s
pz = 0.819 kN/m2
Overall depth of the superstructure, d = 3.00 m
Distance between centers of trusses, b = 2.00 m
Span length of truss, L = 18.00 m
Truss spacing ratio b/d = 0.67
Solidity ratio = 0.275 (area of members / total area)

Drag coefficent, CD = 1.80 (annex C, IRC 6:2017)

Lift coefficient, CL = 0.75 (cl. 309.3.5, IRC 6:2017)
Gust factor G = 2.00
