Chem-3003 Lab Format

This document outlines a lab experiment to determine the sulfate content in an unknown sample through gravimetric analysis. The objectives are to determine the constant weight of crucibles, weigh barium sulfate precipitate formed, and calculate milligrams of sulfate as sulfur trioxide. The procedure involves precipitating barium sulfate from samples, filtering, drying and weighing precipitate in pre-weighed crucibles. Calculations are shown to determine milligrams of sulfate from the barium sulfate weight gained and gravimetric factor. Trials yielded average sulfate content of 79.0 mg in the unknown 1L sample.

CHEM-3003 LAB FORMAT

Objectives:

 find the constant weight of the 3 crucibles

 Obtain the weight of BaSO4 using the precipitative gravimetric analysis
 Calculate the milligrams of sulfate expressed as sulfur trioxide.

Procedure:

The procedure of this lab can be found in fol

(mg) = 88.1 mg = 65.4 mg = 83 mg

Average mass of SO3 (mg) __________79______________

Unknown Sample: __1L____

Calculations:

Weight of BaSO4 Product:

Constant Weight of Crucible and Product (22.5517g) – Crucible constant weight (22.2949
g) = 0.2568 g

SO3 in Total Sample:

0.2568 g BaSO4 x 1 mol analyte/ 1 mol ppt x (80.06 g/mol SO3) / (233.4 g/ mol BaSO4) = 0.0881
g SO3

SO3 in Total Sample (mg):

0.0881 g SO3 x 1000 mg /1 g = 88.1 mg

Average mass of SO3:

(88.1 mg + 65.4 mg + 83.0 mg) / 3 = 79.0 mg

Conclusions:

Proceeding with the gravimetric determination of sulfate in the lab it was found that the constant
weight of the crucibles was an important factor to determine the constant weight of the product,
therefore once the constant weight of each crucible was determined it was possible to define the
weight of BaSO4 after using the gravimetric analysis.

Using three 500 ml beakers and diluting 25 ml of the unknown sample solution with 1 ml of
concentrated HCL in each flask was necessary to mix it, after boiling it ,with 50 ml of 10%
barium chloride to confirm the completeness of the precipitation. When the BaSO4 precipitation
was settled the next step of the lab was to decant the solution through filter paper until all the
product was on it, then after weight the product in each crucible, the final step of calculating the
milligrams of sulfate expressed as sulfur trioxide was done using the equation of gravimetric
factor.

Mols analyte / mols ppt * formula weight SO3 / formula weight BaSO4

Thus, obtaining an average mass of 79.0 mg SO3. This value means that in the sample of the
product this experiment 79 .0 mg of SO3 can be obtained.
