Safe dance practice is very important to every student who engages
in any dance activity. Remember that as a student, being fit is critical to
being safe. You need to know the importance of safe dance practice in
order to stay fit. This module will give ideas on the different dance related
injuries and different safety procedures to exhibit during dance activities.

ABSTRACTION
Sprains and strains both refer to damage to the soft tissues in the body,
including ligaments, tendons, and muscles. They are common injuries that
share some symptoms but affect different body parts. People can often treat
sprains and strains at home.
SPRAIN
Is an overstretched, torn, or twisted ligament.
A ligament is a tough band of fibrous tissue that connects bones to other
bones or cartilage.
Ligaments are usually located around joints.
Commonly sprained areas include the wrists, ankles, thumbs, and
knees.
STRAIN
Is an overstretched, torn, or twisted tendon or muscle.
A tendon is a tough cord of fibrous tissue that connects muscles to
bones.
Commonly strained areas include the legs, knees, feet, and back.
A strain can also occur suddenly, but it may develop over time.
Symptoms include:
pain or tenderness
swelling
bruising
muscle spasms or cramping
muscle weakness
limited movement in the area
Page 3
Treatment for sprain and strain
It is important to follow the four-step RICE protocol for both sprains and
strains to reduce swelling and relieve pressure on the affected area:
RICE stands for:
Rest: Stop any exercise or physical activities and avoid putting any
weight on the affected limb.
Ice: Apply ice to the injury for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. People
can use bags of frozen vegetables if they do not have ice packs.
Compression: To help reduce swelling, a person can wrap the affected
area with a bandage or trainer’s tape. Loosen the wrap if the area gets
numb or if the pain increases.
Elevation: Keep the injured area raised above chest level if possible.
Page 4
It can be difficult to tell a broken bone from a dislocated bone. For either
type of injury, get medical help right away. If possible, ice the joint and keep
it immobile while you're waiting to be seen.
Stop any bleeding. Apply pressure to the wound with a sterile bandage,
a clean cloth or a clean piece of clothing.
Immobilize the injured area. Don't try to realign the bone or push a bone
that's sticking out back in. If you've been trained in how to splint and
professional help isn't readily available, apply a splint to the area above
and below the fracture sites. Padding the splints can help reduce
discomfort.
Apply ice packs to limit swelling and help relieve pain. Don't apply ice
directly to the skin. Wrap the ice in a towel, piece of cloth or some other
material.
Treat for shock. If the person feels faint or is breathing in short, rapid
breaths, lay the person down with the head slightly lower than the trunk
and, if possible, elevate the legs.

ACTIVITY 3: In order to prevent the occurrence of injuries, your task is to put
on the Proper Etiquette and safety in order from 1 – 10. Put the number on
the blank provided.
_____ Only use equipments that you already know how to use
_____ Check Yourself - practice proper hygiene and care.
_____ Be Alert and Aware in the training area.
_____ Bring back all equipment in place after use.
_____ Take care in using facilities and equipment
_____ Do not Hug the equipment.
_____ Be nice, as a general rule!
_____ Return the equipment properly or leave the venue clean.
_____ In performing exercises and movement in general, practice good form
first.
_____ Move on the double; do not loiter around the venue or hang on thee
quipment doing nothing.

Read and analyze the situation below and Identify whether it is sprain,
strain, fracture or dislocation and decide what first aid management to apply.
Make a video presentation of the first aid management. In your video
presentation, you have to mention the injury. You need to have a partner/s
for your role playing, you may choose any of your family members, or a
classmate in your neighborhood. Make sure that if your partner is your
classmate, you have to do it alternately.
Situation: You are having a dance exercise early in the morning with a group
of people when someone stepped on a stone and injured his/her ankle.
You’ve noticed that the injured area appears to be swelling and has bruises.
The injured person complains of pain and a popping sound was heard upon
touched.
Rubric as follow:

MULTIPLE CHOICE: Read and carefully analyze the questions. Choose the
letter of the correct answer and write your answer on the blank provide
before the number.

ray shows that he has tear tendon. What injury indicates a torn tendons?
A. Sprain C. Strain
B. Fracture D. Dislocation
_____4. Your friend has a sprained ankle and one of the first aider elevated
the injured area after applying the rest management. What is the
significance of this management?
A. It will provide back flow of blood

One application in giving first aid is the bandaging. Below is a link on
the bandaging techniques. Make a video presentation of yourself doing
the bandaging. All you have to do is to choose at least 3 part of the
body to apply the bandaging. Again you will be needing a partner.
Rubrics is the same with the first video presentation.
