Safe dance practice is very important to every student who engages
in any dance activity. Remember that as a student, being fit is critical to
being safe. You need to know the importance of safe dance practice in
order to stay fit. This module will give ideas on the different dance related
injuries and different safety procedures to exhibit during dance activities.

This module will start with a pre-assessment which will determine

your prior knowledge on the topic. Series of activities and discussions will
encourage you to explore and learn about the topic. Through this module,
the objectives below are desired.

Learning Objectives:

PEH11FH-IIi-j-11 Identifies school and community resources in case of

an injury or emergency
PEH12FH-Ia-t-12 Demonstrates proper etiquette and safety in the use of
facilities and equipment.

DANCE RELATED INJURIES AND SAFETY PROCEDURES IN THE USE

OF FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS.

Sprains and strains both refer to damage to the soft tissues in the body,
including ligaments, tendons, and muscles. They are common injuries that
share some symptoms but affect different body parts. People can often treat
sprains and strains at home.

SPRAIN
 Is an overstretched, torn, or twisted ligament.
 A ligament is a tough band of fibrous tissue that connects bones to other
bones or cartilage.
 Ligaments are usually located around joints.
 Commonly sprained areas include the wrists, ankles, thumbs, and
knees.

A sprain usually happens suddenly around a joint. Symptoms may be

mild or severe, according to how many tissue fibers are affected. Symptoms
include:
 pain
 swelling
 bruising
 limited movement around the joint
 inability to put weight on the joint or use it normally
 a “popping” sensation at the time of the injury

STRAIN
 Is an overstretched, torn, or twisted tendon or muscle.
 A tendon is a tough cord of fibrous tissue that connects muscles to
bones.
 Commonly strained areas include the legs, knees, feet, and back.

A strain can also occur suddenly, but it may develop over time.
Symptoms include:
 pain or tenderness
 swelling
 bruising
 muscle spasms or cramping
 muscle weakness
 limited movement in the area

Page 3
Treatment for sprain and strain

It is important to follow the four-step RICE protocol for both sprains and
strains to reduce swelling and relieve pressure on the affected area:
RICE stands for:
 Rest: Stop any exercise or physical activities and avoid putting any
weight on the affected limb.
 Ice: Apply ice to the injury for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. People
can use bags of frozen vegetables if they do not have ice packs.
 Compression: To help reduce swelling, a person can wrap the affected
area with a bandage or trainer’s tape. Loosen the wrap if the area gets
numb or if the pain increases.
 Elevation: Keep the injured area raised above chest level if possible.

When to see a doctor?

A person should see a doctor if they experience any of the following
with a strain or sprain:
 pain and swelling that gets worse over time
 pain and swelling that does not improve with home treatment
 fever or chills
 difficulty walking or standing without pain
 limited movement and flexibility around the joint or affected area
 numbness or tingling in the affected area
 a deformity or symptoms of instability of the joint/extremity.

Fracture is an injury caused by sudden trauma: Direct force – directly onto

the bone or Indirect force - force is transmitted through one or more bones
injuring another bone. Common locations are ankle, wrist, hips and legs. It is
characterized by pain & tenderness, swelling or bruising, deformity, loss of
function, bone protruding if open fracture, *crepitus, *loss of sensation.

Dislocation an injury caused by trauma to the joint or when an individual falls

on a specific joint occurs most frequently on finger, elbow, shoulder, and
knee. It is characterized by pain & tenderness, swelling or bruising, deformity,
loss of function, bone protruding if open fracture, *crepitus, *loss of sensation.

Page 4
It can be difficult to tell a broken bone from a dislocated bone. For either
type of injury, get medical help right away. If possible, ice the joint and keep
it immobile while you're waiting to be seen.

First Aid for both Fracture and Dislocation:

Don't move the person except if necessary to avoid further injury. Take these
actions immediately while waiting for medical help:

 Stop any bleeding. Apply pressure to the wound with a sterile bandage,
a clean cloth or a clean piece of clothing.
 Immobilize the injured area. Don't try to realign the bone or push a bone
that's sticking out back in. If you've been trained in how to splint and
professional help isn't readily available, apply a splint to the area above
and below the fracture sites. Padding the splints can help reduce
discomfort.
 Apply ice packs to limit swelling and help relieve pain. Don't apply ice
directly to the skin. Wrap the ice in a towel, piece of cloth or some other
material.
 Treat for shock. If the person feels faint or is breathing in short, rapid
breaths, lay the person down with the head slightly lower than the trunk
and, if possible, elevate the legs.

Proper Etiquette and Safety in the Use of Facilities and Equipments

Remember that following these Proper Etiquette and Safety will prevent
harm and injury.
1. Take care in using facilities and equipment
2. Only use equipments that you already know how to use
3. Be alert and aware in the training area.
4. In performing exercises and movement in general, practice good form first.
5. Bring back all equipment in place after use.
6. Do not hug the equipment.
7. Return the equipment properly or leave the venue clean.
8. Check yourself - practice proper hygiene and care.
9. Move on the double; do not loiter around the venue or hang on thee
quipment doing nothing.
10. Be nice, as a general rule!

Read and analyze the situation below and Identify whether it is sprain,
strain, fracture or dislocation and decide what first aid management to apply.
Make a video presentation of the first aid management. In your video
presentation, you have to mention the injury. You need to have a partner/s
for your role playing, you may choose any of your family members, or a
classmate in your neighborhood. Make sure that if your partner is your
classmate, you have to do it alternately.

Situation: You are having a dance exercise early in the morning with a group
of people when someone stepped on a stone and injured his/her ankle.
You’ve noticed that the injured area appears to be swelling and has bruises.
The injured person complains of pain and a popping sound was heard upon
touched.

One application in giving first aid is the bandaging. Below is a link on
the bandaging techniques. Make a video presentation of yourself doing
the bandaging. All you have to do is to choose at least 3 part of the
body to apply the bandaging. Again you will be needing a partner.
Rubrics is the same with the first video presentation.
