EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION
(Problems involving exponential function, equation and inequalities)

I. Learning Competencies:
1. Solves problems involving exponential function, equations and inequalities.
(M11GM-Ig-2)
II. OBJECTIVIES
1. Solves problems involving exponential function, equations and inequalities.
III. Key Concept.

Exponential Models and Population

Growth
Suppose a quantity y doubles every T units of time. If 𝑦0 is the initial
𝒕
amount, then the quantity y after t units of time is given by 𝒚 = 𝒚𝟎 (𝟐) 𝑻

Example 1: At t = 0, there were initially 10 bacteria in a petri dish. Suppose that the
bacteria doubles every hour. Give an exponential model for the bacteria as a function
of t.
Let t represent the number of hours and y represent the number of bacteria per hour,
we have.
Solution.
Initially, at t = 0 the number of bacteria is 20
Time (hour) Number of bacteria
0 20
1 20(2)1
2 20(2)2
3 20(2)3
4 20(2)4
5 20(2)5
𝑡
An exponential model for this situation is 𝑦 = 20(2)1 or 𝑦 = 20(2)𝑡 .

1
Exponential Functions and Half-Life
If the half-life of a substance is T units and y0 is the amount of the substance
corresponding to t=0, then the amount y of substance remaining after t units of time
𝒕
𝟏
is given by 𝒚 = 𝒚𝟎 (𝟐)𝑻

Example 2: Suppose that the half-life of a certain radioactive substance is 10 days

and there are 10g initially, determine the amount of substance remaining after 30 days,
and give exponential model for the amount of remaining substance.
Solution: Let t representing the time it takes the radioactive substance to decay in a
certain amount.
Time (days) Amount of substance
0 10g
10 5g
20 2.5g
30 1.25𝑔
𝑡
1 10
An exponential model for this situation is 𝑦 = 10 (2)

COMPOUND INTEREST

If a principal P is invested at an annual rate of r, compounded annually, then the

amount after t years is given by 𝐴 = 𝑃(1 + 𝑟)𝑡

Example 4: The value of your car is decreasing by 8% per year. If the car is worth
PHP 780 000 today, what will it worth in five years?
The value of the car decreased by the same percent each year, so this can be
represented by and exponential function

Illustrative solution:
Value of the car at the end of year 1: 780 000 – 0.08(780 000) = PHP 717 600
Value of the car at the end of year 2: 717 600 – 0.08(717 600) = PHP 660 192
Value of the car at the end of year 3: 660 192– 0.08(660 192) = PHP 607 376.64
Value of the car at the end of year 4:
607 376.64– 0.08(607 376.64) = PHP 558 786.51
Value of the car at the end of year 5:
558 786.51 – 0.08(558 786.51) = PHP 514 083.59

The value of the car after 5 years is PHP 514 083.59. The same value can be obtained
using this formula since the problem is depreciation.
𝐴 = 𝑃 (1 − 𝑟 )𝑡
Substitute P = 780 000, r - = 8% or 0.08, t = 5 where A is the value of the car after 5
years
𝐴 = 780 000(1 − 0.08)5
A = 514 083.59

IV. Activities

ACTIVITY 1. EXPONENTIAL GROWTH

Direction. Read each problem carefully. Solve the following in a separate sheet of
paper.
1. There are 50 bacteria in a container initially. Suppose that the bacteria doubles
every 10 days. (a)Determine the amount of bacteria in a container after 100 days.
(b)Give an exponential model for this situation.

2. There are 100 bacteria in a bacteria initially. Suppose the bacteria in a container
doubles every 15 minutes. (a) Give an exponential model for the situation. (b) How
many bacteria are in the container after 1 hour?

ACTIVITY 2. EXPONENTIAL DECAY

1. The half – life of a certain radioactive substance is 5 days. Initially, there are 8
grams present. How many grams are present after 30 days?

2. Suppose that the half-life of a certain radioactive substance is 10 days and there
are 10g initially, determine the amount of substance remaining after 30 days, and give
exponential model for the amount of remaining substance.

3
ACTIVITY 3. COMPOUND INTEREST
1. Mr. Santos invested PHP 100 000 in a company that offers 6% interest
compounded annually. How much will this investment worth at the end of 8 years?

2. The Philippines has a population of around 80 million people and it is estimated

that the population will double in 20 years. If the population growth continues at the
same rate, what will be the population 15 years from now?
𝒕
Recall that the formula for exponential growth is 𝒚 = 𝒚𝟎 (𝟐)𝑻, we can also apply this
formula for finding the population growth.

3. The student council of a school notices that their membership is growing 3% per
year.
a. The membership is currently 350 students. Write an exponential function to model
the number of students’ council per year.

b. How many members of student council will be after 4 years?

Use the formula 𝐴 = 𝑃 (1 + 𝑟)𝑡 since the number of student council increases 3% per
year.
