EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION
(Problems involving exponential function, equation and inequalities)
I. Learning Competencies:
1. Solves problems involving exponential function, equations and inequalities.
(M11GM-Ig-2)
II. OBJECTIVIES
1. Solves problems involving exponential function, equations and inequalities.
III. Key Concept.
Example 1: At t = 0, there were initially 10 bacteria in a petri dish. Suppose that the
bacteria doubles every hour. Give an exponential model for the bacteria as a function
of t.
Let t represent the number of hours and y represent the number of bacteria per hour,
we have.
Solution.
Initially, at t = 0 the number of bacteria is 20
Time (hour) Number of bacteria
0 20
1 20(2)1
2 20(2)2
3 20(2)3
4 20(2)4
5 20(2)5
𝑡
An exponential model for this situation is 𝑦 = 20(2)1 or 𝑦 = 20(2)𝑡 .

Exponential Functions and Half-Life
If the half-life of a substance is T units and y0 is the amount of the substance
corresponding to t=0, then the amount y of substance remaining after t units of time
𝒕

is given by 𝒚 = 𝒚𝟎 (𝟐)𝑻
COMPOUND INTEREST
Example 4: The value of your car is decreasing by 8% per year. If the car is worth
PHP 780 000 today, what will it worth in five years?
The value of the car decreased by the same percent each year, so this can be
represented by and exponential function
Illustrative solution:
Value of the car at the end of year 1: 780 000 – 0.08(780 000) = PHP 717 600
Value of the car at the end of year 2: 717 600 – 0.08(717 600) = PHP 660 192
Value of the car at the end of year 3: 660 192– 0.08(660 192) = PHP 607 376.64
Value of the car at the end of year 4:
607 376.64– 0.08(607 376.64) = PHP 558 786.51
Value of the car at the end of year 5:
558 786.51 – 0.08(558 786.51) = PHP 514 083.59
The value of the car after 5 years is PHP 514 083.59. The same value can be obtained
using this formula since the problem is depreciation.
𝐴 = 𝑃 (1 − 𝑟 )𝑡
Substitute P = 780 000, r - = 8% or 0.08, t = 5 where A is the value of the car after 5
years
𝐴 = 780 000(1 − 0.08)5
A = 514 083.59

IV. Activities
2. There are 100 bacteria in a bacteria initially. Suppose the bacteria in a container
doubles every 15 minutes. (a) Give an exponential model for the situation. (b) How
many bacteria are in the container after 1 hour?
2. Suppose that the half-life of a certain radioactive substance is 10 days and there
are 10g initially, determine the amount of substance remaining after 30 days, and give
exponential model for the amount of remaining substance.

ACTIVITY 3. COMPOUND INTEREST
1. Mr. Santos invested PHP 100 000 in a company that offers 6% interest
compounded annually. How much will this investment worth at the end of 8 years?
3. The student council of a school notices that their membership is growing 3% per
year.
a. The membership is currently 350 students. Write an exponential function to model
the number of students’ council per year.
