Lesson
Evaluation of Algebraic
1 expressions

This is a lesson on evaluating algebraic expressions. A clear

understanding of the concepts in this lesson will help you easily grasp how to
evaluate algebraic expressions.

What’s In
Perform the indicated operations.

1. 3 (-7) =

2. 32 + 4 =

3. (-2 + 5)2 =

4. 3[-8 + 2] =
5. 4 ÷ 10 + 62 =

What’s New
Suppose numbers are assigned to the letters of the alphabet as follow: A=1,
B=2, C=3, D=4, so on, up to Z=26. Find the value of your name by adding the
values of its digits. See example below.

MARIA

M=13 A=1 R=18 I=9

So, 13 + 1 + 18 + 9 + 1= 42
What is It

Replacing a variable with a number demonstrates the Substitution Property of

Equality.

 Substitution Property of Equality states that if two quantities

are equal, then one quantity can be replaced by the other.
 In symbols: for all numbers a and b, if a=b then a maybe replace by b.

When a number substituted for the variable in a polynomial, the polynomial

takes a numerical value. Finding the value is called Evaluating the
Polynomial.

These are the steps to follow in evaluating algebraic expressions:

1. Substitute the given values for each variable.
2. Simplify first the expressions within the parenthesis.
3. Simplify the expressions with exponents.
4. Perform all indicated operations and simplify the result.

Example 1.Evaluate the polynomial 6𝑥2 + 3when x= 3

Solution:
6𝑥2 + 3 = 6(3)2+3 Substitute the value of x which
is 3 in the given expressions.
= 6(9) +3 Simplify.

= 54 +3
= 57

Therefore,6𝑥2 + 3 = 57 , so 57 is the answer.

Example 2. Evaluate 3x-2y+5 when x =2 and y = 4

Solution:
3x-2y+5 = 3(2) -2(4) +5 (the same procedure in example 1)

=6-8+5
= -2 + 5
=3

Therefore, 3x-2y+5 = 3, so 3 is the answer.

Example 3. Evaluate 4(a-3) + 3(a+2) when a =5

Solution:
4(a -3) + 3(a +2) = 4( 5 – 3) + 3( 5+2) Substitute the value ofawhich is 5
from thegiven equation.
= 4(2) + 3( 7)Simplify.
= 8 + 21
= 29

Therefore, 4(a -3) + 3(a +2) =29, so 29 is the answer.

What’s More

Evaluate the following expressions using the given values:

a = 1, b = 2, c= 3, x = -3, y = -2, and z = -1.
1. 2a + b – c
2. 6𝑎2 − 𝑏(y+z)
3𝑎
3. -7b
5

4. 4x+3y
5. 3c - 5𝑧2
What I Have Learned

Based on your understanding of the lesson, enumerate the steps to follow in

evaluating algebraic expressions.

1.

2.

3.

4.

What I Can Do

A. Tell whether each statement is TRUE or FALSE.

1. If x=-3, then the value of 4x-5 is 17.

2. If b=-4, then𝑏3 − 3 is 61.

3. If x=0 in the expression 6x-1 the result is -1.

4. If a=5, then the value of 9a+3 is 45.

5. If a=3 and b=2, then the value of 15a-24b is -3.

B. Answer each of the following:

1. Evaluate x1 + x2 + x3 if x1 = 4, x2 = x1 + 5, and x3 = 3x2.

2. Evaluate the length of segment PQ if x = 4.5 cm and y = 7cm.

2x|3y -x|6x – 3y

P Q
Lesson
Addition and Subtraction of
2 Polynomials
In lesson 1, you have learned how to evaluate algebraic expressions.
Now, you will learn about how to add and subtract polynomials.

What’s In
Determine if the terms below are similar. Write S for similar terms and D for
dissimilar terms.

1. 5x, 3xy

2. 2ab, -5ab, 10ab

3. xy, -xy, 15xy

4. 3bz2, 7b2z, 35bz

5. 15st3, -st3, 42st3

What’s New
Group the similar terms below. Number 1 is done for you.

Given Polynomial Group the Similar Terms

1. 5x -6x+9xy + 11xy -12x + 4y ( 5x – 6x – 12x ) + (9xy +11xy)

2. 25nm -15n3m +7nm +11n3m

3. 8r2 - 10r2 + 12r2 + 8r + 18r
What is It

To add polynomials, write the sum and simplify by combining like terms
then follow the rule in addition of integers (like terms add, unlike terms
subtract).
Example 1.(2x +3y-6xy) +(-5x +2y+3xy)

2x+3y-6xy Arrange like terms and

-5x+2y+3xy place them under the same column. Then, add.
-3x+5y-3xy
Therefore, -3x+5y- 3xy is the answer .

Example 2: ( -3x+5y-7z ) + ( -6x-8y+10z)

-3x+5y-7z
-6x-8y+10z
-9x-3y+3z
Therefore,-9x-3y+3zis the answer.

Example 3.( 2𝑎2 + 4𝑎𝑏 − 3𝑏2) +(6𝑎2 −4𝑏2) +(-3𝑎2 − 6𝑎𝑏 + 9𝑏 2) + (-7ab+2𝑏2)

2𝑎2 + 4𝑎𝑏 − 3𝑏2

6𝑎2 − 4𝑏2
-3𝑎2 − 6𝑎𝑏 + 9𝑏2
-7ab +2𝑏2
5𝑎2 − 9𝑎𝑏 +4𝑏2
Therefore, 5𝑎2 − 9𝑎𝑏 +4𝑏2is the answer.
To subtract polynomials, follow the steps in subtracting integers.
Recall that to subtract integers, add the additive inverse of the subtrahend to the
minuend.
Example 1. (4𝑎3 − 2𝑎2 + 5𝑎 + 7) – (3𝑎3 − 8𝑎2 − 9𝑎 − 14)Change the sign of
= ( 4𝑎3 − 2𝑎2 + 5𝑎 + 7) + (-3𝑎3 + 8𝑎2 + 9𝑎 + 14)the subtrahend and
proceed to addition.
4𝑎3 − 2𝑎2 + 5𝑎 + 7 Arrange like terms
-3𝑎3 + 8𝑎2 + 9𝑎 + 14 under the same
𝑎3 + 6𝑎2 + 14𝑎 + 21 column. Then, add.
Therefore, 𝑎3 + 6𝑎2 + 14𝑎 + 21 is the answer.

Note that, in the above example, the additive inverse of each term in the
subtrahend is added to the minuend. Then similar terms are combined.

Example 2. (9x+1) –(-2x+2)

= (9x+1) + (2x-2)

9x+1
+ 2x- 2
11x-1
Therefore, 11x- 1 is the answer.

Example 3. (2x-23y) – (7x+5y -16z)

= (2x-23y) + (-7x-5y+16z)

2x-23y
+ -7x -5y +16z
-3x -28y +16z
Therefore, -3x -28y +16zis the answer.
What’s More

Perform the indicated operation.

1.(7a+6b-2c) –(11a-3b-8c)
2.(18m -11y) +(-24m-7y)
3.(47x-25y+36z) +(-57x-86y+15z)
4.(7x+3y) +(5x-4y)+(-2x-6y)
5.( 54x𝑦3 + 49𝑥2𝑦2 -72𝑥3𝑦 +38) –(67-28𝑥2𝑦2+29x𝑦3)

What I Have Learned

Fill in the blank to make a statement true.

1. To add polynomials, write the and simplify by
