Q1. Show diagrammatically the electron distribution in a magnesium atom and a magnesium ion.
Q2. (i) The average atomic mass of a sample of an element X is 16.2 u. What are the percentage of
isotope 16X8 and 18X8 in the sample?
(ii) On the basis of Thomson’s model of an atom, explain how the atom is neutral as a whole.

Q12. The velocity of a particle moving along a straight line in a certain time interval is shown below. What is
the distance travelled during acceleration?

Q13. Two stones are thrown vertically upwards simultaneously with their initial velocities u 1 and u2
respectively. Prove that the heights reached by them would be in the ratio of u1 2: u2 2
(Assume upward acceleration is – g and downward acceleration to be +g).
Q14. A force of 5N produces an acceleration of 8 m/s2 in mass m1, and acceleration of 24 m/s2 is mass m2.
What acceleration would be if both are tied together?
Q15. Two objects of masses 100 g and 200 g are moving along the same line and direction with velocities of
2 m/s and 1 m/s respectively. They collide and after the collision, the first object moves at a velocity of
1.67 m/s in the opposite direction. Determine the velocity of second object.
Q16. What is the work done by the force of gravity in the following cases?
(a) Satellite moving around the earth in a circular orbit of radius 35000 Km
(b) A stone of mass 250 g is thrown up through a height of 2.5 m.
Q17. (a) What is the work done to increase the velocity of a car from 36 Km/ h to 72 Km /h if the
mass of the car is 1500 kg ? Does the work done by the force have a negative or a positive
magnitude?
(b) Where does an oscillating pendulum have maximum PE and KE?
Q18. An object of mass m when raised to height h possess a potential energy of 1200 J. Find the new
potential energy :

Q19. A stone is dropped from a cliff. What will be its speed when it has fallen 100 m?

(i) How high will it go before it begins to fall?
(ii) How long will it take to reach that height?
