It is Well with My Soul

Psalm 46:1-3 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore

will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into

the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the

mountains shake with the swelling thereof”.

Romans 8:28 says, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love

him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Horatio Spafford was a businessman and a devout Christian, among his close friends was

several evangelistic including the famous Dwight L. Moody, was also from Chicago. In 1870

things started to go wrong in the life of Horatio, Spafford’s only son died of scarlet fever at

the age of four a year later, his fortune has come to an end during the Chicago Fire of 1871,

or also called as Great Chicago Fire, burned from October 8 to 10, 1871, and destroyed

thousands of buildings which Horatio invested heavily in real estate holdings on the shores;

he lost everything in one night.

Horatio decided to take his wife and four daughters on a holiday to England to get away

from their troubles and to help D.L. Moody on his evangelistic tour of Britain. The Spaffords

travelled to New York in November of 1873 to catch a French steamer to cross the Atlantic.

At the last-minute, a business development forced Horatio to stay behind. He saw his family

onto the ship and made plans to catch up with them later.
Now things go wrong again, the ship carrying the Spafford’s which is ‘Ville de Havre’,

collided ‘The Lochearn’, and an English vessel. It sank in only 12 minutes, claiming the lives

including his four daughters, Annie, Maggie, Bessie, and Tanetta. Only his wife Anna was

spared. Horatio Spafford boarded the next ship out of New York to join his wife. The

captain called Horatio to the Bridge and said, “A careful reckoning has been made and I

believe we are now passing the place where the ‘de Havre’ was wrecked. The water is three

miles deep.” At this time Horatio returned to his cabin and started to penned or compose

the lyrics of his great hymn.

Sometimes in our life pretty tough and hard but through God we cay, It is well with my

Soul, Psalm 46:1-3 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be

carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though

the mountains shake with the swelling thereof”. Romans 8:28 says, “We know that in all

things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his

purpose.”All things work together for our good, and everything in this life is according to

God’s purpose. Even Anna Spafford said in the midst of her despair she heard a voice say,

“You were spared for a purpose”. We don’t always see the big picture in our life, but God

sees it,and God is there for us in it all.

“It Is Well With My Soul” is not only an anchor for spiritual walk but it even helps in weight

loss efforts. Songs are powerful reminders and anchors for journey. They evoke emotion

and move us to action. As I walked in the journey of my life, there are bad things happened,

but as always it is covered by all the good things that God has done in my life. I don’t need
to let the bad things happened get me down. I need to stand up and start down the road

again, Micah 7:8 “Do not rejoice, my enemy; when I fall, I will rise; when I set in darkness,

the Lord will be the light to me”. And this time, look for the good that God makes happen

even in trying circumstances.
