Subtracting Integers Notes

- Subtracting integers involves taking away one integer from another. There are three methods to solve integer subtraction problems: using algebra tiles, sign rules, and number lines. - With algebra tiles, subtracting means taking away tiles of one color from another. Following sign rules, subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite. There are always three methods to solve questions with
integers. We will learn how to use these three methods to

SUBTRACTING INTEGERS USING THE SIGN RULES
+5 - (-2)
+7 - (+3) -7 - (-3) *Subtracting an integer is the same as adding its opposite.*
Step 1: Write the equation:
(+12) - (-5) =
I have no -'s to take away so... Step 2: Convert the second integer to its opposite:
I add enough zero pairs to do it. The second integer is (-5). The opposite number is (+5).
I need two -'s so I add 2 zero pairs -7 - (+3) +7 - (-3) (+12) - (+5)
Step 3: Change the subtract sign in the middle to an
add sign and then add the two integers together:
(+12) + (+5) = +17
Now I can take away my -2

=+7
