Technology Overview
Flexible AC Transmission
Systems (FACTS)
• Smart Wires products are part of the family of
FACTS devices for improving the security and
flexibility of the existing transmission system.
• FACTS devices are typically categorized into shunt-
connected devices, series-connected devices or
combinations of the two
• Shunt-connected devices are typically used for
voltage-regulation.
• Series-connected devices are typically used for
power flow control. Shunt/Series combinations
include the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC)
• The current focus of Smart Wires products is on
series-connected devices for power flow control
utilizing high power electronics for control and
protection
Advantages Versus Traditional Solutions
Minimized Risk of Long Term Investment
Particularly important when considering future projects where need arises in a small number of scenarios
and where there is uncertainty as to when the need will materialize.
Re-deployability
The Smart Wires units are designed to be re-deployable to another area of the network if a greater need
materializes.

• Smart Wires Guardian technology balances power on parallel paths and allows UKPN to add
new generation capacity.
Smart Wires • Two deployments alleviate feasibility constraints and provide granular, real-time power flow

• With this solution, UKPN quickly addresses system constraints and meets near-term needs of
its network.
Improve Transfer Capacity Across Regional Boundary
Application of SmartValve technology at 330 kV
• The output of a set of large hydropower plants in Australia is constrained by the capacity of
the meshed 330 kV network.
• Reconductoring the lines is not economic due to their length and the associated construction
Challenge and outage costs.
• Traditional series compensation has significant fixed cost, requiring considerable scale to be
economically-justifiable and resulting in further downstream limitations.
+180 MW
• The two SmartValve deployments initially unlock 80 MW of latent network capacity, but can
easily be expanded to release up to 180 MW.
Impact • The solutions help the region meet its renewable generation target by optimally leveraging
Substation New additional Power Flow the existing hydro generation and creating capacity for additional renewables.
