1. The Desktop
Exercise 1: Shortcut to the calculator
Place the mouse on the desktop and try to create a Shortcut to the calculator
giving it the name My Calculator.
The calculator is called calc.exe and it is found in c:\windows\System32.
It can happen that the calculator in your computer is not in the same directory,
soyou may need to look for it.
If for any reason you cannot find this file you can create the Shortcut for something
else you like.
Exercise 2: Changing the time  
1 Change the time of your clock to 12:12:12, in case it coincides with the actual time,
make up another time.

2 Change the month to October.

3 Change the day to 14.

4 Change the year to 2011.

5 Select as time zone the one for Cairo.

6 Allow it to change the time according the summer schedule.

7 After this exercise, check the changes and restore the right time and date.
 
Exercise 3: Adding Tool Bar  
1 Add the tool bar for Quick start.

2 Add the tool bar for Desktop.

3 Remove the tool bar for Desktop.

4 Try to add another one. If it is helpful, keep it.


2. The Windows Explorer

Exercise 1: Create a folder


structure
1 Create the following folder structure.

My folder can be create in any unit you wish.

Exercise 2: Deleting Folders or  


files
1 Create a word document named nom 221 and save it on folder Ex 22
2 Create a word document named nom 222 and save it on folder Ex 22
3 Delete the document nom 222
4 Delete the folder Ex 21.

Exercise 3: Copy and Move folders or  


files
1 Copy the document nom 221 to the folder Exercise 2
2 Move the entire folder Exercise 2 to the folder Exercise 1

Exercise 4: Having several copies of a file in a folder


1 Create the following folder structure.

This directory can be done in any unit you wish; it does not have to be D.
2 In the folder Access2000 create two documents named document1 y
document2.
3 Once created, try to copy document1 two times in the folder Excel2000 and
name them doc1 y doc11.

Exercise 5: Searching for the last file created


1 Open the Windows explorer, select a folder, and search for the last one created.
 
Exercise 6: Organizing Folders
1 Add to folder Ex 22 the following files in the following order.

Amparo
Rodrigo
Carlos
Ana
Luis
Felipe

2 Once created organize them by Name

3. The Search

Exercise 1: Searching Files


1 Search for the file calc in the drive C.
2 Search the files modified betweenl 5/02/2001 and the 7/02/2001
3 Search files or folders that start with Ex, but only in the folder My documents,
not in subfolders.
Exercise 2: Searching for  
hardware
1 Find the name of the computer of a friend.
2 Try to access a shared function.
 
Exercise 3: Searching in the address  
book
1 Search in your address book a person
named Tom.
2 If you find him change his phone number, if
not try with another name.

4. The Recycle Bin

Exercise 1: Restore
elements in the Recycle
Bin
1 Create the following documents Exer1, Exer2, Exer3, Exer4 on the notepad,
and a folder named Folder1; create a copy of a document that you already have
and name it personal, then move it to the desktop.
2 Once created, delete them.
3 Restore the files Exer2 and Exer4

Exercise 2: Deleting element in the  


Recycle Bin
1 Delete the folder Folder1 from the Recycle Bin .
 
Exercise 3: Emptying the Recycle Bin  

1 Empty the Recycle Bin .

5. Configuring the Monitor

Exercise 1: Wallpaper
1 Select as wallpaper the image called flowers.
 2 Choose the position of the image as tile.
 3 Change the wallpaper to an image you have in your computer or a photo.
 
Exercise 2: Screensaver  

1 Choose 3D Flower Box.


 2 Select as value to Wait 7 minutes.
 
Exercise 3: Configuration  

1 Change the colors to Highest Color (32 bits).


 
2 Choose a resolution of 800 by 600 píxels.

6. Configuring the mouse

Exercise 1: The mouse buttons


1 Configure the mouse for left handed individuals and decrease the double-click
speed of the mouse.

Exercise 2: The mouse pointer  

1 Select as the pointer option Windows inverted.

Exercise 3: pointer options  

1 Make the mouse have trails.

7. Adding and removing programs

Exercise 1: Installing or uninstalling


1 Select a program that interests you from the ones we show next and install it
through the Internet. Then you can try it and uninstall it if you do not like it. The
majority will expire in 30 days.
Adobe acrobat reader, from the web www.adobe.com is a program to read PDF
files; it may be that you already have it installed.
Macromedia Flash, from the web www.macromedia.com. This is a program to
create animated web pages.
Paint Shop Pro, from the web www.jasc.com . An excellent program for drawing.

Exercise 2: Windows install  

1 Uninstall the Calculator program, which is a


component of the Windows Accessories.
2 Install the calculator again.

8. Adding new Hardware

Exercise 1: Installing new hardware


The best exercise for this unit is to install a new
piece of hardware. As this is probably not the case at
this time, the best thing to do is to wait until you have
to install hardware.
Another solution would be to uninstall some
hardware and then install it again. Normaly nothing
should happen, but if you have someone available
that can help you in case of a problem, then go
ahead, if not it is better to wait. You know the proverb
´´if it is not broken do not fix it´´ and we do not want to
be the source of your problems.
1 Try to install some hardware that is not properly
installed in your computer.
If you dare to try this, the hardware that is the least
problematic is the scanner. You can also try installing
the printer from another computer.
9. System tools

Exercise 1: System information


1 Search through the system information what
version you have installed in certain programs, for
example Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, etc. This
way you will not need to open each application to
know the version of the program.

10. Scheduled Tasks

Exercise 1: Periodic running of a program


1 Program the running of the Disk Cleanup that it is
done at 11:00 h on Tuesdays

11. Windows Media Player

Exercise 1: Creating a playlist


1 Create a playlist called My list
2 Add two songs that you have in your music library to My list.
3 Delete one of the songs added to My list.
 
Exercise 2: Copying a CD

1 Insert a CD with songs, select the 3 songs that you like the
most and copy them to a folder called Songs; this folder should
be found in the C drive c:\temporary

12. Windows help

Exercise 1: Finding help


1 This exercise is about practicing different ways to get help on a particular matter.
For example, find the way to delete a file.
