1 NOUNS AND COUNT NOUNS
The key to effective communication is having the ability to know
how to use nouns in the correct way. Being able to speak and write
correctly builds your confidence.

This module will help you use clear and coherent sentences
employing appropriate grammatical structures by familiarizing yourself
with the use of mass nouns and count nouns.

What’s In

Directions: Before you start a new lesson, let us have a short review of
the lesson learned on the previous module. Read the selections below
then answer the questions that follow. Write your answers on a separate
sheet of paper.

Pinakbet, an Ilocano cuisine, is stewed vegetables. The usual


vegetables included in the dish are eggplant, bitter melon, okra and
tomatoes. The dish is seasoned with bagoong or fermented fish
paste.

Reading Time: Read the selection below and note the
significant details. Be able to answer the comprehension questions.

Gabbie helped her mother bake their favorite cake. First, they
prepared the baking tin, spoon, bowl and other utensils. Then, they
gathered all the ingredients for the cake like flour, sugar, butter, milk
chocolate and some eggs. After everything was ready, they mixed all
the ingredients in the bowl. Next, mother poured the mixture in the
baking tin. Then, she placed it inside the oven. After an hour, the cake
was ready. Gabbie added some icing and fruits on top of the cake.
Everybody enjoyed Gabbie’s special chocolate cake.

What is It

Mass Nouns are nouns that cannot be counted. Generally, they


cannot be pluralized. In selection above, the following are examples of
mass nouns.
flour sugar
milk chocolate
butter icing
Other examples of mass nouns are:
water powder
sauce vapor
wire lotion
hair cement
rice soup
dust cheese
beer wine
sugar salt
coffee soy sauce
Examples of sentences with mass nouns are the following. Take
note that the underlined words cannot be counted.
1. I want my pizza to have lots of cheese.
2. Don’t forget to put soy sauce in your adobo.
3. People nowadays are very addicted to coffee.
4. Rice is considered as staple food for Filipinos.
5. Jacky’s hair is very thick.

Count Nouns are nouns which can be counted as one or more. It
is also called “countable nouns”. In the selection above, the following are
examples of count nouns:
baking tin bowl
spoon oven
eggs fruits
Other examples of count nouns are:

books shirts
chairs tomatoes
computer pants
boxes cats
dogs blackboard
apple picture
houses ballpen

Examples of sentences with count nouns are the following. Take


note that the underlined words can be counted.

2. I would rather use a ballpen than a pencil.
3. Mother asked me to buy ten eggs to be used in making leche
flan.
4. The houses in Mabuhay Village are too wide.
5. Printers nowadays are very useful in printing modules.
