Unit 12 Activity

This document provides instructions for solving 5 problems related to traffic data and highway transportation. It includes calculating density, speed, spacing, capacity, and accidents from given observations of vehicle counts, times, distances, and accident statistics. The problems cover topics like density, time and space mean speed, free flow speed, spacing, capacity, and determining peak hour traffic from vehicle count data.

ACTIVITY 9

INSTRUCTIONS: Solve the following problems systematically. Write your complete solution and encircle
your final answer and make sure to write the corresponding unit. You may open your notes and
references for you to be guided in doing the activity.

1. Two sets of students are collecting traffic data at two sections x and y of a highway 600 ft apart.
Observation of x show that five vehicles passed that section at intervals of 8.18, 9.09, 10.23, 11.68
and 13.64 sec. respectively. If the speeds of the vehicles were 50, 45, 40, 35 and 30 mph
respectively.
a. Compute the density of traffic on the highway. (Ans. 44 vehicles per mile)
b. Compute the time mean speed. (Ans. 40 mph)
c. Compute the space mean speed. (Ans. 38.7 mph)

2. The jam density on the approach of the traffic flow on a single lane of Juan Luna Street is 120
vehicles per km, with a density on the approach of 40 vehicle per hour. If the space mean speed is
40 kph, determine the mean free speed in kph. (Ans. 60 kph)

3. The speed of a car moving on a single lane is 60 kph. If the length of the car is 4.2 in. and the value of
the reaction time is 0.7 sec.
a. Compute the average center to center spacing of cars in meters. (Ans. 15.87 m)
b. Compute the capacity of the single lane in vehicles per hour. (Ans. 3781 veh/hr)
c. Compute the average density of traffic in vehicles per km. (Ans. 63 veh/hr)

4. Based on the record of road accidents, find the number of fatal accidents in 1996, if the severity
ratio for a period of 5 years was 0.24863. (Ans. 12)

Year Property Damage Injury Fatal

1992 205 56 2
1993 178 48 3
1994 152 41 3
1995 190 60 5
1996 236 86 x

5. The results of a traffic count taken between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. are given below:

Time Interval Volume (Vehicles)

5:00 – 5:15 PM 900
5:15 – 5:30 PM 1000
5:30 – 5:45 PM 1200
5:45 – 6:00 PM 850
The peak hour factor needs to be determined for this section of freeway. (Ans. 0.82)
