EXERCISE 5a PDF

The document contains 7 problems involving probability mass functions and mathematical expectations of discrete random variables. Problem 1 asks to determine if a given function can be a probability mass function and find the probability distribution of variables related to drawing marbles from an urn. Problem 2 gives the probability distribution of phone lines in use and calculates probabilities related to the number of lines. Problem 3 calculates the expectation and variance given probability distributions.

1. Determine whether the function given by f(x) =(x+2)/25 for x=1,2,3,4,5 can be serve as the probability
distribution of a random variable X.

2. An urn contains 5 white and 4 black marbles. If 3 marbles are to be drawn at random without replacement and
X denotes the number of white marbles, find the probability distribution of X.

3. A mail-order computer business has six telephone lines. Let X denotes the number of lines in use at a specified
time. Suppose the probability distribution function of x is given in the accompanying table.
X 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
P(X=x) 0.1 0.15 0.2 0.25 0.2 0.06 0.04

i. At most 3 lines are in use (0.7)
ii. Fewer than 3 lines are in use (0.45)
iii. At least 3 lines are in use (0.55)
iv. Between 2 and 5 lines inclusive are in use (0.71)
v. At least 4 lines are not in use (0.7)

4. Find the distribution function of the total number of heads obtained in four tosses of a balanced coin.

5. Find the distribution function of the random variables X given that the probability distribution function of X as
follows:
0 1 2
P(X=x) 3/28 15/28 5/14

6. Suppose that a random variable X has a discrete distribution with the following probability distribution function:
cx for x = 1,2,3,4,5
f(x)= 
0 otherw ise
i. Determine the value of c
ii. Find P (2 < X ≤ 4)
iii. Determine the distribution function for X, F(X).

7. The distribution function for a discrete random variable X is given as follows:

0 x0
0.2 0 x2

0.35 2x 4
F ( X )=
0.6 4 x6
0.95 6 x8

1 x 8
i. Find the probability distribution function for X
ii. Find P (X ≥ 5)

B) Mathematical Expectation

X 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
P(X=x) 0.1 0.15 0.2 0.25 0.2 0.06 0.04
Calculate the expectation of X. (2.64)

2. Given the following probability distribution function for a discrete random variables x:
X 0 1 2
P(X=x) 0.2 0.6 0.2
Calculate E(X), E(X2), E(X3) and Var(X). (1, 1.4, 2.2, 0.4)
