Task 4: Refine

Guide Questions

1. How did the mother start the conversation?

According to the given text, the mother started the conversion with her daughter (Belle)
by greeting her intimately and asking about Belle’s day.

2. What are the restrictions in the conversation?

Restriction is evident in the second line of Belle where she didn’t fully state the progress
of her homework.

3. Do they have a good turn-taking strategy? How could you say so?

Yes. They’ve utilized questions and command to give an opportunity to the other person
to have a response.

4. How did the speakers manage the topic control, shifting, and repair?

Talking about the topic control, it is well managed because the speakers kept the
conversation going by asking questions and responding to it. When it comes to shifting, the
speakers seamlessly changed the topic from homework to staying up until night and for the
repair; the speaker (specifically the mother) was able to give comprehensible messages therefore
overcoming the breakdown in the conversation.

5. Are you satisfied on the termination strategy employed by the speakers? Why or why
not?

Yes, because both of the speaker came up on one consensus that Belle will start her
homework as soon as possible.
