Saiho Hinagata - Clothes In Miniature Made As Sewing Experiences

Mitsumura Suiko Shoin 2020 ISBN 9784838105908 Acqn 31136
Pb 13x16cm 296pp col ills £36

Tatsugoro Watanabe began educating young women in the early Meiji era, at a time when fewer
than half as many women as men received any sort of academic training in Japan. Primarily
focused on Japanese and Western sewing techniques, Watanabe's school also instructed women
in basic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics. In addition, he devised an efficient
programme to maximise educational benefits through minimal time, effort, and cost. Watanabe's
pioneering approach is reflected in the creation of 'saiho hinagata', a one-third scale sewing
model produced by students between the 1880s and 1930s. Numerous examples of these are
presented in this book.

Stephanie Baechler - Dear Clay,

Building Fictions 2020 ISBN 9789082771213 Acqn 31140
Pb 20x28cm 240pp col ills £33.75

'Dear Clay', gathers a selection of spreads extracted from Stephanie Baechler's meticulous
sketchbooks displayed in chronological order (2013-2019), as well as 35mm photographs
documenting her working process. Providing an intimate insight into her artistic practice, it reveals
what facilitates the work from its conception to its making, transportation, and installation. Rather
than presenting it as a final staged object, we see the work as something unpolished, unfinished,
in flux. Activating this archive of images allows to search for what creates the identity of a work
behind the surface of the conventional gallery presentation.
