CONCLUSION Bitumen Test

The experiment aimed to determine the quality of bitumen used in flexible pavement. The results found the average penetration was between 64.33 and 67.667 dmm, and the softening point temperature was 49°C. Based on these values, the penetration index was 0, indicating the bitumen was a conventional paving type. Additionally, the ring and ball test showed the softening temperature is important for pavement materials, and the penetration test helps grade hardness for different climates and construction types.

CONCLUSION

Based on the experiment, we can conclude that the objectives of the experiment which is to
determine the quality of bitumen used in flexible pavement achieved. During conducting the lab,
we found out that there are several errors that occurred which slightly affect the result of the
experiment such as for Ring and Ball Test, the eyes are not perpendicular to the thermometer’s
reading. While for Penetration Test, the needle was not cleaned properly with benzene and dried
before the penetrated. The average penetration result from our experiment is 64.33,66.33 and
67.667 dmm, meanwhile for softening point temperature is 49 ºC. From both of the data that we
obtain, the value of the Penetration Index is 0. From the value of the Penetration Index shown, we
can conclude that the sample is Conventional Paving Bitumen type. For Ring and Ball Test, it
proved that the temperature at which bitumen soften has particular significant for materials which
are to be used as pavement material, thick films such as joint and crack filler and roofing material
while penetration test purpose is grade the material in terms of its hardness. So, the grading of
bitumen help to assess it suitability in different climatic condition and type of construction.
