2) a) Show that every permutation is the product of its cycles.

3) a) If P is a prime number and, P α O(G) then prove that G has a subgroup of order P α .

b) Show that every finite abelian group is the direct product of cyclic groups.

4) a) If R is a commutative ring with unit element and M is an ideal of R, then prove that
M is a maximal ideal of R if and only if R/M is a field.

b) Prove that a Euclidean ring possesses a unit element.

5) a) Prove that J[i] is a Euclidean ring.

b) State and prove Gauss Lemma.


6) a) Prove that the element a ∈ K is algebraic over F if and only if F(a) is a finite
extension of F.

b) If L is an algebraic extension of K and if K is an algebraic extension of F, then show


that L is an algebraic extension of F.

7) a) Prove that a polynomial of degree n over a field can have atmost n roots in any
extension field.

b) Prove that the fixed field of G is a subfield of K.

8) a) Prove that G is solvable if and only if G (K) = (e) for some integer K.

b) Prove that the general polynomial of degree n ≥ 5 is not solvable by radicals.

9) a) Prove that a lattice L is modular if and only if a ≥ b and a ∪ c = b ∪ c,

b) Explain the partially ordered sets.

10) a) State and prove Schreier’s theorem.

b) Prove that every distributive lattice which more than one element can be represented

b) Let P be a nonempty perfect set in Rk. Then show that P is uncountable.

3) a) Prove that the subsequential limits of a sequence {Pn} in a metric space X form a
closed subset of X.

b) Show that the product of two convergent series need not converge and may actually
diverge.

4) a) Prove that a mapping f of a metric space X into a metric space Y is continuous on X


if and only if f −1 ( V ) is open in X for every open set V in Y.

b) Suppose f is a continuous mapping of a compact metric space X into a metric space

5) a) Prove that on [a,b] if and only if for every ε >0 there exists a portion P
