ASSIGNMENT No. 1
Q.1
(a) Find the value of y if y: 27 = 13: 9
y : 27 = 13 : 9
9y = 27*13
9y = 351
y = 351 / 9
y = 39
(b) Find the time of complete the distance at a speed of 100km/ hour. If it takes 5 hours to
complete the same distance at a speed of 60km/ hour.
60x5=300
So it’s a 300 miles journey.
300/100=3
So at 100 km/h it’s a 3 hour journey.
Q.2
(a) Solve the following linear system of equation by using Graphical and Matrix formation
methods.
4x + 6y = 4
4x + 2y = 8

(b) Consider a rectangle whose area is 64m2 and perimeter is 40m. Find the width and length of
the rectangle.
Area = xy = 64
y = 64/x
Perimeter = 2(x+y) = 2(x+64/x) = 40
2(x^2 +64) = 40x
2x^2 + 128 = 40x
x^2 +64 = 20x
x^2-20x +64 =0
x^2 – 16x – 4x +64 = 0
x(x-16) -4(x-16) = 0
(x-16)(x-4) = 0
x = 4, 16
y = 16, 4

(b) Solve the following systems using matrix method as well as Cramer’s rule.
4x + 2y + 3z = 8; 2x - y + z = 5; 3x - 4y - z = 3.

Q.4
(a) The 2nd term of a G.P is 4 and 8th term is 16384. Find the G.P.
In the GP
the 2nd term, ar = 4 …(1)
the 8th term, ar^7 = 16384 …(2)
Divide (2) by (1)
r^6=4096, so
r^3 = 64
r = ±4.
We use r = 4
Hence
GP = a, ar, ar^2, ar^3, ar^4……..
GP = 1, 4, 16, 64, 256…
(b) Use principle of mathematical induction to prove the following identity.

Let n = 2
25 > 9 + 4
Let n = k
5^k > 3^k + 2^k
Let n= k+1

10
Course: Understanding of Mathematics and Statistics (9417)

5^(k+1) > 3^(k+1) + 2^(k+1)

5.5^k > 3.3^k + 2.2^k
This is true for n=k.
Q.5

(a) Find if y2 = x3 + cos xy

(b) Find the minimum or maximum values of the following function. y = x2 -2x+5
